I was listning to G3 the one with Eric Johnson and really loved the tone from his gibson in the Jam up. which duncan hum buker wld get closest to that tone wld it be the 59 or Alnico 2? and secondly if i chose to pu it in the neck wld it match the JB?
I can't speak for the best Duncan, but I bet this would get you there...
from : localhost/what I've seen on the Dimarzio site, maybe the Jazz would get you close?
I my memory is right EJ plays a early 60's 335. If it is before 1964 it has PAF's on it. In that case there isn't any PUP manufactured today that will sound as good. That being said you can get real close with Antiquities, Seth Lovers, Pearly Gates, or the Alnico2 Pro. IMO the Alnico 2 Pro gets closest to the warmth of the real PAFs than any of the others. The Antiquity or Seth Lovers are a real close sounding vintage style type of PUP. The Pearly Gates is a little hotter and therefore will have a more agressive tone when played thru a OD type of Amp. I have a custom made Semi Hollow body guitar. It is equipped with a Jazz in the Neck, and a '59 in the bridge. It gets some very convincing 335 type of tone from those PUPS.
I'd say the Duncan 59B. It's alnico 5 like those early 60's Gibson humbuckers and wound with pretty much the same wire and to pretty much the same specs: about 8.15K.
Through a cranked Marshall (the other half of that tone!) or similar sounding amp, my 59B sounds alot like that Clapton/Cream Eric Johnson tone...even in my Strat!
Bludave's suggestions will get you great tone too!

Yeah i was thinking ogf 59s or the alnico, I lved his tone in the g3 jam up, it moved away from the tone of Joe sat and Vai, and was really pleasing to the ears ( dont get me wrong I love Joe sat)
As smooth sounding as that 335 was I'd say A2P. I tend to thin the 59's are too bright for that smooth of a sound. To get the absolute closest the Antiquity A5's would be the way to go.
His tone on Red House was very nice.
