Hey guys,
I've been playing my semi-hollow AM-50(like a Gibby 336, though Ibanez thought of it first! ) for sometime with the stock Super58 pickups in them. Pretty good sound out of this guitar. I think I could probaly do better, though.
I like the neck sound I get. I use it mostly for Jazz and get a pretty smooth sound out of it. It does get a tad muddy sometimes and doesn't work well under distortion. Since thats the case, I don't use the neck with distortion much. It would be nice to get a good fusiony tone out of this axe.
The bridge pup doesn't do much for me. The clean tone is okay for jangly stuff, but not much else. With distortion applied it is pretty fat, but a little flabby and undefined. I'd like to be able to put some gain on 'er and get some serious rock tone.
What do you guys suggest? Anyone have experience with the Super58 enough to make some comparisions?
I know the typical 59/59 or Jazz/JB would probably work fine. Maybe something a little more rockin' in the bridge position(Custom, DD, C5)? I've wondered how an Alnico II would sound in the neck....
Of course if I do any of this I have to delve into the inenviable task of changing pups in a semi....uggh...
Thanks!
Mike
The Alnico II sounds great in the neck of my semi. Sweet, warm and smooth
come to mind. I use a 59' in the bridge that offers a nice contrast Bright,
bite'in and vintage sounding.
I'm a fan of alnico II loaded pickups, so for a smooth, classic sound, the Seth Lover set would work great. For a slightly more aggressive tone, the Pearly Gates set would be great.
Another option would be a set of Phat Cats. I have a set of them in my Epi Sheraton andthe work great for jazz, funk, classic rock, blues, and even clean country pickin'. They are noisier than a regular humbucker, but if you don't mind a it of noise, the tones are great.
Custom Custom for the bridge -- kiss all that jangle goodbye. Seth Lover for neck is a great idea.
What sort of magnets does the Super 58 use?
A source from IbanezCollectors.com told me they are Alnico 3.
seth lovers would work for smoothness
I think an A2P for the neck and a Seth Lover for the bridge.
Don't kiss the jangle away!! Jangle is good!!!
Well... sorta.
