Looks like it may have been re-routed for humbuckers (DiMarzios I would suspect to look at it)
But it's got the reverse shape, neck through...TOM bridge/stop *without* the banjo tuners...never seen a reverse without banjos that I can remember(?)
This pic would be circa 1978/1979.... there's quite a bit of writing on the headstock/truss rod cover...
hell maybe an Ibanez? EDIT: here's a direct link..pic shows up in preview mode, but not when I post
Linky
Reverse Firebirds discontinued mid 1965. Some reverse models have transition specs combining reverse and non-reverse features. Reintroduced 1972 to 1979. Re-introduced again 1990 and still available.
I've never seen that finish on a 60's FB. I don't think I've seen that finish on a FB period. That tailpiece is goofy too. It kind of reminds me of the original tailpiece on the Thunderbird basses.
I just noticed that the stop tp is sitting pretty dang far back...perhaps where the holes for a vibrola tp used to be?This guitar puzzles me....all I know is it's exactly what I would order from the Gibson Custom Shop...
Mmmmm.......I LIKE BIRDS!!!!! Wait til TGWIF chimes in......he's a walking talking encyclopedia!!!!!
He'll probably know what concert that picture was taken at amp; what Gary had to drink backstage!!!

Hmm..now that ya say that..the stop TP does kinda look like a schaller or something, huh? (but smaller)
They use that finish nowadays...but I'm not totally fam with old birds...
maybe it IS an Ibanez....
I posted over on the LP forum...maybe one of those hardcore Gibson guys over there will chime in....
I'm stumped...either a Gibson ripoff or a fairly heavily modified Gibson...
I wish it was a clearer pic. If you could see the Pickgaurd Logo like in my
Avatar. It would be a No-brainer... 1976 Bi-cent model. But wait.. I have seen Bi-cent model made up to 79'. Mine is a 76' has the 00xxxx serial #.

I've never seen a pic of the bicentennial...alos the whole distance from the quot;tom' to the quot;stopquot; is goofy...unless like I mentioned above, someone put it there to cover up where the lyre was...
I found some old Ibanez catalogs online and they didn't produce a bird that looked like that at least in a stock form (well at least that they advertised)...They were all typical Firebirds...reverse body w/ banjos....
I thought about a 'transitionquot; Firebird too, but even then the color still isn't right....
It's bizarre...and Gary really wasn't know for butchering guitars...everything he's owned has been pretty much a stock guitar...I could see where he'd pull the lyre off of one though....especially then, as he really wasn't into his Strat phase yet...

ME Too!
And yes..Christian knows his gear
I'm a huge Gary fan, know most of the ins and outs of his gear over the years (up until 1991 or so anyway), and yet I'd never ever seen a pic of him before with a Firebird...Not to mention one basically exactly like I want outta the custom shop.....kinda floored me.
Just got this from over at the Les Paul Forum
Custom made.
I saw a better pic of it back in 79/80, and I seem to recall the TR cover saying quot;Pete Backquot;... if so, I guess it's this guy:
from : localhost/www.guitarmaker.co.uk/
tried e-mailin the dude in the link for info and it came back undeliverable....
No reviews on his guitars on Harmony Central either...
cwap...
