I want my 80's metal explorer really bad and was thinking maybe I'd just get a ESP custom shop EX seeing as how its pretty much what I want any ways. All they'd have to do is reverse the headstock, put some binding on it, some new inlays and spray it in hot pink. I did their online quote and know its total bs. It quoted me $5,250. No way I'm paying that for a $1,500 guitar with all off the shelf stuff and a different paint job. What I want is nothing crazy and I'm limiting myself to about $2k, maybe a pinch more. Sooo.... I was wondering if anyone has ordered through them? What the cost was like and what the build time was like?

Almost all of your questions are answered in there...
As far as rough estimates go, I think quot;normalquot; for ESP is something like Retail -30 to 40%, depending on dealer... essentially the same as Jackson / Charvel....
I doubt that you can get a New neckthru ONE-OFF Custom from either for under 2,5k, BTW ... you want cheaper, then get the production model used and modify it..... were talking literally over 100 man hours at a piddlyass rate of 10-15$ /hour.... And the company has more costs to pay than just the luthier´s salary.... Like materials, shipping, advertising, accountants (In ESPs case lawyers to weasel out of the constant lawsuits ).... and probably isn´t doing it as a charity...
Custom guitars are expensive... That´s why J/C and ESP offer production models with what are generally the standard options of most custom orders

I know that you have to go through an authorized dealer and all that business, which sucks, but I had no idea it would take 8 months. Jesus.... am I ordering an ESP or a PRS private stock? HA! I bet a private stock guitar costs a minimum of $12.5k now and takes you a year and a half to get.
Ok, fair enough.... you edited your response and told me price like I asked for before I could post response. Hahahaha. Now I look like I can't read. Oh old illiterate me.

LOL, wasn´t my intent... but comical nonetheless
Side note: I can´t believe i actually HELPED someone on a ESP purchase and only took ONE cheap shot....... Must be the meds
ESP has a LONG wait time and the prices are pretty high. for what you want it will be WELL over $2k for sure! it would be cheaper to buy a used Edwards or Gibson explorer and have it refinished bound and a floyd added for sure.

Think I may have solved the problem! Found a builder (recommended from another forum member) who said he'd build it for a decent price and actually build the guitar I really want.... The Paul Gilbert prototype Ibanez Destroyer/Iceman hybrid! I'll be pretty stoked if this goes down.
