Is it necessary, or recommended, to ground this preamp to the bridge?

The bridge should still be grounded even with an onboard pre-amp. I would say the easiest and safest way would be to run the bridge ground wire directly to the ground lug of the output jack. That way you don't take a chance of messing up any of the pre-wired stuff on the tone circuit.
