Hey everyone, how's it going?
Got a quick question just to get your opinions on this.
I bought a custom made 59 bassman circuit amp, had sozo caps amp; mercury transformers put in it. It is in a staggered 2x12 tweed cab but it has some generic celestions in it that sound very bland. Was wondering what your opinions would be on some vintage Jensen C12N speakers or even some vintage Jensen C10n or Celestion G10 vintage speakers. I just love the word vintage, lol.
I know the original bassman has the 4x10 cab so can I do the SRV type thing or just plain old smokin' blues with any of these combos? For the 2x10s I would get a seperate cabinet. Also, would the 2x10 pairing cut down on the incredible amount of bass this amp has? Sometimes it's overwhelming. Thanks everyone.
the quot;SRV thingquot; is pretty much any low output neck pickup through a loud BF amp. The 59 bassman could get close, but it has no reverb and has less headroom than it's BF counterparts.
Awesome amp for blues breakup though.
roll down that bass knob if there's too much bass! That's what it's there for! The rule of thumb with fender amps that tend to be bassy is roll the bass down as you raise the volume.
A 2x12 and a 2x10 would be a pretty sweet mix. As mentioned in another thread by other forum bro, the smaller the speaker, the fewer bass frequencies it will attempt, so you'll get more of a tight, punchy sound with 10's. 12's sound a bit looser, but the sound is simply chunkier and bigger. The actual 'bass volume' change is minimal though-10's are known for having a great bass sound.
I roll back the bass knob and even on two, the bass is still too much on the neck pickups for both my strat and les paul. This makes the bridge pickup sound tinny. I can't find a happy medium yet like I can with my other amps so I was figuring it's probably the crappy speakers. Just want to know in people's opinion if the 2x10 option would harness the amps capabilities better than a 2x12 and what they thought of those speaker combinations.
I run my bass at 2 and treble at 6 with my BF Bassman through a 2x12 Marshall sealed box. It sounds great with every guitar I own. I woul suggest a 2x12 with bright speakers, my favorite is the Electrovoice 12L. It's a killer. Very, very clean and very bright, but it can do wonders with a dark amp like my (and possibly your) Bassman.
That could be it. I've run this amp through a 4x12 with 2 v30s amp; 2 G12h30s and while it sounded Marshall good, it didn't really sound Fender good, lol.
Are you familiar with any of the speakers I mentioned in my previous posts? I don't know if they are brighter amp; tighter or not.
In my Marshall cab, I now have a pair of V30's and in my Vox cab (open back) I have an Eminence Private Jack (similar to G12H30) and a Texas Heat (close to a 12L, but warmer).
The 12L I had paired previously with a v30 in the Marshall cab is definately tighter, brighter, and a lot louder than any of the other speakers I've used. I still have the 12L, but it's sitting by itslef in a EV Eliminater sealed cab. I actually use it when recording or practicing with my 4003 Ric bass.
Oh, BTW, the reason I don't gig out with the 12L's in my cabs anymore is because they don't break up AT ALL, and they make for a very heavy extension cab.
Thanks Benjy--I've had the EV speakers in other amps and that's why I wouldn't consider them for this amp. I do want the break up but the bass is way too heavy and muddy. I know it's the speakers because when I use the 4x12, the bass response is way better, but it sounds like a Marshall--which is cool, but I want this to sound like a Fender. I was hoping that the Jensens or maybe the Celestion Vintage 10s could help this amp.
Of course, this could be the amps MO. Maybe it's going to sound like a Marshall and not a Fender. I know the first Marshalls were based on this amp but man, using a Les Paul, I could play Judas Priest! Thing is I've got two other amps that do that thing as well or better. Got this one cuz I wanted the whole blues/blues rock thang, lol.Anyone got any opinions on the Jensens or Celestion G10 vintage?
