I was looking around for a reputable Gibson dealer and came across Center City Music in San Diego. Saul was a great guy and gave me a great price on it. It was only in the store for no more than 3 days when I purchased it. He shipped it overnight to me and when I opened it up and I could smell the nitrocellulose lacquer on it (nothing else quite like it ).
She's my main player and I call her quot;Sharonquot; (my gf actually contributed to that ). The neck gives great jazz, fusion and blues tones, the middle position gets warm and full with a sparkly and complex high end and the bridge crunches and sustains like nobody's business.
She just came back from the repair shop. I have to give huge props to Chris at East Coast Music Mall. He did some wonderful upgrades for me. The stock button tuners were terrible so they got torn out and fresh chrome Sperzels were put in. I lucked out and already had the lightweight aluminum wraparound historic tailpiece on my Gibby so all Chris had to add was the locking Tone Pro's tuning studs. He also gave it an amazing setup (it's intonated almost flawless, which is unheard of for a wraparound bridge) and he managed to salvage the screwed up nut from Gibson. She now stays perfectly in tune (even after being in a case overnight) and she sustains better than ever!
Dammit, I want one of those!!!
Seriously though, That's a sweet axe - enjoy it!
Very cool man! While I'm not a huge fan of P90's, I think I could live with that one.
sweet looking guitar man i bet it sounds amazing too
did you have to make the holes on the peghead bigger for the sperzels to fit or did they drop right in?
Beautiful guitar Chris. I have heard many great things about Saul at Center City. Sounds like he goes out of his way to help people get the great guitars they want at prices they can afford.
It's a shame that you have to have a setup and nut job done on a brand new Gibby, but that is the current state of things. The deal is, once you get it done right....nothing plays like a Gibson. Congrats.
That is sweet. I've been wanting one of those double cuts for quite a while. Now I have some major GAS again. At first glance I thought it was a LP faded DC until I saw the wraparound bridge. Enjoy the axe.

Actually, that's a very good question. I'm not fully sure about that. I know they aren't a direct fit from looking behind the headstock. The button tuners were attached to a small metal strip and when he fit in the Sperzel's for me he had to screw them in a different part of the headstock than where they were before. At some point, I will have him put in a new nut and fill up those small screw holes on the back of the headstock (he told me he can always lacquer over it so it will be unnoticeable).
I love the Sperzels to death and they've been a miracle already, so I can safely recommend them to anyone considering them. The stock was really junk and I'd say it's imperative to get new tuners on those particular models (atleast Grovers on many of the others held the notes relatively well, these stock ones on this particular guitar were just garbage). As Chris put it, back in the 60's when they came out, the Specials were considered an quot;economyquot; guitar, so to keep it's authenticity, Gibson probably wasn't about to start using high quality tuners on the new ones.
She's my very first Custom Shop Historic Gibby (actually priced cheaper than most PRS) and I've never been so happy with a guitar; I'm finally getting the tones I've been really looking for

I'm just happy I found a good man to get my Gibson in tip top shape.
I spent less than $200 total at the repair shop with upgrades and for what I got, I fell it was more than worth it. I bought from Saul blindly and he delivered a Gibson that had no fret buzz, perfectly polished/rounded frets, flawless binding, straight grain wood with an acoustic unplugged type resonance... something Gibson typically hasn't been known for as of late. I will definitely buy from him again
That's a great looking Gibby. Glad you like her so much!
Thats a very nice guitar.
It's similar to what Evan wanted. He should definitely check out this thread.
i now have drool all over my keyboard....very nice!!

thats gorgeous! you and matt99camero have given me p90 gas!
at the end of summer, I plan on either getting one of those les paul juniors that MF had off ebay or one of those sg juniors they made a few years ago, again, off ebay of course.
they both have single dog ear p90s, and i'm pretty sure both have the wraparound.I'm working with a lawn care service and selling everything thats not nailed down currently to try to get a used DRRI and fulltone OCD, cause I have no amp, then I'll start working towards a junior!
NICEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love it, enjoy the hell out of that one man.
Tough to argue with P90s and a slab of mahogany. Play the snot out of it
ummmmm.... I HATE YOU.... TheChris if you don't mind me asking how much was she?
which model is it? i really dig the double cut, p90s and the neck binding. is it a CS or historic or is it production.
Sweet! I almost bought a goldtop from Centre City - they have a huge selection of Gibby's are great prices, going in that store is a great experience. I feel majorly lucky that I have several excellent high end gear stores all within and hour or so drive - Centre City, WildWest Guitars, Tone Merchants, it don't get any better than this!
Nice! I've been keeping my eye out for a singlecut cherry red version of that guitar.
I've been outta the guitar buying phase for awhile. I've been learning to just enjoy the ones I have. I feel I'm slipping, as a gear ho! LOL
Super nice Chris!!!
I love P90s amp; if you ever think about changing them, I highly recommend the Custom 3s !!!
very cool player
I've known Saul for years, and recently got my '57 Goldtop from him.
my Goldtop was set up very well, but it's possible that if yours was there just 3 days, it didn't make it over to Fred's for a once over ... and yeah, I've heard that Gibson's often need a nut adjustment
enjoy
