I've always wondered what guitars the 'long legged Duncans' are for? I forgot the technical name for the ends of the baseplate, but I noticed that there's two different lengths for them. What's the scoop?
I think that the long legged ones are for Lesters and similar guitars, and the short legged ones are for guitars like my Carvin ( I even had to round off the corners on the mounting tabs), my hamer, and my MIJ 69 Thinline RI.
I don't get it. Almost all the pickups I get are short legged ones, but every once in awhile I run across one with the longer legs. Are these OEM or special ordered ones, or do they just make some of them like this?
As I understand it, original Gibson PAFs had long legs, so the Duncan PAF-alikes have long legs to be accurate to the vintage spec, whereas the quot;progressivequot; and quot;modernquot; Duncan humbuckers have short legs. The short legs will fit any guitar (though you may have to shorten the springs), but the long legs don't fit some modern guitars that have shallow cavities.
Then again i've got a JB with the long legs. My best guess would be its an OEM thing.
It was strange when I replaced my JB/APH combo with the Custom/59, the length reversed! It was actually a little dificult to get the neck 59 in there along with the new shielded cable.
The first SD humbuckers all had long legs, just like the old PAFs. Then, we started offering short legged humbuckers to fit into thinner bodied instruments. In the early '90s we decided to shift all non-vintage humbuckers from long legs to short legs.
The current vintage humbuckers, e.g., '59, Seth, Antiquity, etc., continue to use the long legged bottom plates. Some OEM customers order '59s or Seths with short legs.
.....whats OEM stand for?

can you get the PAFalikes with short legs via floor shop custom?
I could swear all the Seths I've bought had short legs. Is that possible, or am I mistaken?
