I have a super 70 that came stock with a alncio 8 and it only reads 7.89K
it does metal very well trust me!

Exactly what I was thinking. The 9.5k and an aggressive magnet with what I call quot;completequot; mids sounds VERY interesting indeed.....we'll find out in November when my shipment of 8's comes in.

Out of curiosity on this line of thinking, has anyone tried a ceramic in an overwound vintage type pickup (somewhere in the high 8's to mid 9's)?

How do you know what windings and what magnet will sound good together? What about the poles? 9.5K and an alnico 8 magnet but the poles are a big part in the sound too right?

Buck Cannon, do you have one of these pickups?

Or is this purely a hunch?

The poles do make a difference, but not as much difference as the length of the wind, the pattern of the wind, or the magnet.

In any event, 99.9% of those of us looking for a 9.5k pickup with this kind of sound are thinking traditional PAF-style humbucker design with the normal pole pieces.

I may make one, I got a Shattner winder and a small rewind service here at home.

I have designed a total 19 pickups that our on todays market place.
I have played around so much that I can predict pretty close what things will sound like -- long before they are made.. Its a GIFT I've tapped into over the last 6 years.. a gift I did not know I possesed. they (17 out of 19) made a over Million dollars for my last work place-- it's made SQUAT for me -- its been very painfull trying not to feel negitive about being abused and ripped off.. but I'm OK life goes on..
the other (2) From another mfg. I get full credit for and props to my feel theres a void in humbucker bridge pickups-- Necks are easy to dial in, Hot Rod style PAF type Bridges all gather around 8-9-10k then theres a jump up to because of the wire is changed to a smaller dia. to about 14K I think?
So an magnet swap may provide some answers, yet generally speaking Strong magnets are not the quot;chocolatequot; of tone..AlNiCo 5 is a little too strong , yet the intresting thing about the A-8 is that it quot;doesquot; have the ablity -- [due to its metals]-to induct the pickups coil. in wheres Ceramic does not.

So I need to try this... still it all has its limits.. and soon all avenues will be explored if not already??

What would the tonal difference be, by swapping a Custom 5's A5 magnet with the A8?
What would I expect to hear. You say it'd be better to stay around 9.5K, so do you think 14.4 is too much for the A8 magnet?

I think it's a matter of taste -- we're looking for the ideal combination of vintage tone and modern punch. But from Wicked Lester's description of his C8, it sounds like it will work either way, with vintage or heavy winds.

I have a feeling I'll end up with something a good deal heavier than 9.5, Alnico 8 or not. (My own plan is to try it first in a custom-made Jon Moore bucker that reads a little over 11k.)

So could someone theoretically take any 9.5k humbucker and use an A8 magnet with it to try this out?

Yes, and that's where the resistance ratings are misleading. I don't know the technical terms for all of this, but the resistance rating basically measures how hot or cool the coils are wound. While the type of magnet does affect the overall output of the pickups, it has little or nothing to do with the resistance rating.

Zhangliun, i have a custom made A5 11k humbucker, too. Which delivers a fat overdrive sound and is cleaning well with the volume pot. But the humbucker clean and parallel sound is not that great. My last thought was to let the slug coil down to 4.5k to get a 10k Unbucker.
I especially dissapointed with the parallel sound, which is not by any means good as a parallel sound of a JB. Why that?

I'd be very interested in finding out which 19 pickups you designed. I understand that diplomacy might prevent you from divulging that info.

BTW, Buck, if you're looking for names I've got at least one. How about the Buck-bucker

Gear, remember those are just numbers and it is hard to judge a pickup by its resistance numbers. Once you hit 9.5 you have to jump to thinner wire anyway and at that point you normally tend to attenuate some highs and thicken the tone which may or may not be good depending on the primary guitar tone. After all, I have 9.0 PAF style pickups that can be as loud and aggressive as a Custom - 5 no problem.

You guys could check out the WCR Goodwood. Expensive but sounds great, thick, hot....but maybe not as aggressive as some like. Most of the aggression comes from the amp anyway.

There are some pickups in the 11, 12, 13 range......the Rio BBQ and WCR Fillmores come to mind and I think the Scream'n Deamon is around 10 or more?

Oh yes, very much so. If you have a pickup in your guitar with an Alnico 2 in it, try swapping in an Alnico 5 or a ceramic. It will be a very noticeably louder.
