Hey folks, I was reading the whole Parallel Axis story over the weekend, regading how they were intended to quot;thicken upquot; Floyd Rose-equipped axes.
Well, I'm testing pickups on a mahogany TOM guit (epi SG) while I build the superstrat - which will be an all-mahogany Wilkinson-equipped 25quot; scale axe.
So....I'm wondering, how much difference is it going to make that the superstrat will have a trem amp; a bolt-on?
I assume that a 25quot; floyd-equipped ash bodied maple-necked guitar might quot;needquot; a PA trembucker, but that my setup should be more gibbie-like.
Or will I put that set I decided was heavenly on the SG into the mahogany strat and go quot;ack!quot;
I'm figuring that things can't be that different as PRS puts the same pups into their CEs (maple necked bolton) as they do the Standards (all mahogany setnecked) - and some are stoptail some are a wilki-like trem.
different woods, scale length, and bridge design are going to make it sound different, but the character of the pup will still be the same. the patb-3 is a great pup that you should look into if your going for a hotter paf type thing
When you go with a bolt on and a trem you're doing two things differently:
1.The angle and form of attachment will change, how much depends on how tight your joint is.
2. When putting on the Wilkinson, you will be taking some wood out of the body, changing the tone. If you're planning on floating the trem, even more factors come into effect.
Well Benjy that's the thing...the neck pocket does not worry me, USACG makes neck joints like a, well, can't say that on this forum but they are REAL TIGHT!
As for the bridge, I'll use a tremsetter and or have it flush on the body, which takes out the rubber band effect.
Since the PAs were designed for a trem guitar I'm expecting a Good Thing. I definateloy worry the FRED - which is great in the SG - is going to be too bright in the Strat, despite the mahogany construction.
I built a mahogony body strat with the two point Wilk for a client. I first used my own spare FRED out of the parts drawer just to get feel of the guitar, before shopping for pickups. It wasn't too bright. It was quite nice actually. Nice and fat IIRC. Based on this, I decided against the Breed, as I thought the Breed would have too much of a mids hump. IIRC, Dimarzio lists the breed as having a midrange of 8 or 9. We ended up using a Pearly Gates that sounded similar to the FRED in that guitar.
Hi LPB, thanks for the info on the FRED in your strat, good to know. This is a Breed neck PU, mids are like 7.5, not as funky as the breed bridge model.
