well, i got a mexican strat that sounds great, but i just dont like single coils as bridge pickups. and i have 2 humbuckers just sitting around in my house doing nothing, a 59 trembucker and a super distortion. i like the sound of both pickups overall, but just dont know which one to put in the bridge. i was actually thinking the super distortion because with the strat and no tone knob.
what do you guys think?
If you are mixing it with singles I would go for the 59 trembucker. If you could care less about how the bucker mixes with the middle pickup, the super D might be your choice.
I had a regular fullsize '59 in a Strat for years, sounded great even when mixed with the middle pup. I would go with the Trembucker......Joe
I like the 59 Trembucker too. Any hotter than that is just to loud to sound quot;rightquot; with vintage output neck and middle Strat single coils.
how bright is it in the strat
i mainly was concerned about the brightness of it with no tone pot
try em both out. or save up and get a low output one like a jazz.
my little 59 is pretty bright. so this is what you need to do.
you are going to put in the 59 and wire it to the pup selector where there is usually a blank.
if i hadnt done this i would be so mad i got that pickup. but because i can turn the bass on it when i need, which is most of the time, i can make it sound much better
Will you split the pickup? If so, the distortion will sound better split, and also sound better split and mixed with the middle single. But it will be WAY loud when switching to it in humbucker mode, compared to the other pups. So you have to choose what's more important to you.
i probably wont split it
so far it looks like i'll put the 59 in there, i just need to get a different pickguard and then i'll install it
Dude here's how it goes, my formula for mixing weak single coils with high-output bridge humbuckers... you need a tube amp set to break up very slightly when you strum hard with your singles, and for the humbucker to be up close to the strings
Possitions 1-4 become brilliantly diverse clean channels with the tone knobs and such, and posstion 5 becomes a raunchily overdriven channel.
I also switched the second tone pot to be connected to my bridge hotrails...so i can get great bassy cleans from the neck, good bright twang from the middle, and y'know, tone control on my humbucker. Made my Fender my workhouse quot;everysoundquot; guitar...my warmoth with the 59/SD is the guitar for MY music
