Hi there guys
Ok I've just finished installing the APH-1 pickup but I've some queries. Cracking and static noises are heard whenever I play any note and it lasts throughout the sustain. This happens for all the pickups (S-S-H). As long as the string moves, I can hear static/cracking noises as the note is being sustained. If I knock the wood of my guitar, the little vibrations in the strings will produce the static/cracking noise as well. The funny thing is, there is no noticable hum in the humbuckler position and even though my middle pickup is RWRP, there is still a noticeable hum in the 2/4 positions. I have checked the grounding on the volume pot and it appears shiny and good.
I am suspecting that my pickup selector is overheated due to my poor soldering skills. One of the lugs in the pickup selector has turned brownish/black due to overheating. How can I isolate the problem to my pickup selector before I proceed to buy a new one. Are there any possibilities that can cause my apparent problem?
Thanks
The cracking static sounds ONLY occur when I hit any note or when the strings are vibrated by any means when I move the pickup selector switch.
Hmmmm

Thats probably it. As a temporary measure, just bypass the selector switch and solder the one pup's hotwire direct to the volume control lug. If it sounds good there, you've confirmed your problem.

I´d also guess the switch, wiring the guitar up without it will tell you for sure, as Artie said
Hi guys. Thanks for all the help. I just isolated the pickup selector by connecting one single coil pickup directly to the volume pot and removing the wire that links to the pickup selector. Now, the problem still persists. This is getting frustrating!
The static buzzing sound ONLY happens when the string vibrate. Is it possible my volume pot is damaged? Or is my output jack damaged? (even though I didn't touch it before) How can I ensure my volume pot is damaged? Thanks!
Sounds like you might have a weak connection someplace. Try inspecting all of your connections, or bypassing them one at a time to find the source of the noise.
Sounds like one or some of your input lines is touching the ground some where. If all three of the pickups are doing the same thing, it is very likely the input line going from the volume pot going to the output jack is touching the ground. You may have to do some visual checking to find out if that is the case.
Guys, I just made a discovery.
I've purchased a new volume pot but the problem still persists. Was largely dissappointed!
But if I roll my tone knob all the way down, the buzzin/static noise disappears as I play the note. But as I roll up the tone knob, the buzzin/static noise gradullay increases with the note sustaining.
Should I buy a new tone pot or is there some problem with the wiring on the tone knob? I do not want to make the same mistake of buying a new volume pot again!
Thanks for all the help!
It could still be a bad solder connection. String vibration is just the catalyst that sets it off. Even if you replace both the tone pot and cap, its not really a quot;mistakequot; as much as a learning process. You'll still be ahead of the game compared to paying someone else to do it, and you're gaining experience as you go. Your next pup change will probably go smoother.
Artie
Try to bypass the tone knob with a jumper wire. If the noise disappears, it is probably the tone pot or the capacitor is bad. Then you can by pass the tone pot and the capacitor one at a time to pinpoint the problem. If not, then it is something else.
