All this talk of SG's on the forum has started another case of the GAAASSS...this time for an SG with P90's, in the dark wine color that Townsend used, like this: Musician Friend had an exclusive on SG Classic's on sale for $849 recently, but they since gone up in price, they are red, plus I question the QC for an exclusive run for a retailer. For instance, I have heard that the Les Paul's that are made for Guitar Center aren't as nice as the regular line.
I had an SG classic earlier this year (since sold on Ebay) that was a GC creation, and I wasn't thrilled about the pups or the response of the knobs. I love playing through the neck pup, so when I would roll it back, hoping to get a fat tone for jazzier things, the tone did not vary much. Compare that to Townsend Live at Leeds or Isle of Wight, where quot;fiddling aboutquot; with the SG's knobs makes it sounds like several diff guitars.
Anyone have an SG with P90's (GC/MF run or not) ? Am I correct in thinking that the GC/MF exclusive run aren't the same as normal Gibson's?
Happy T-givng,
J
I got an SG standard at guitar center that was absolutely superb.
If you like the guitar, I say go for it. GC and MF have very liberal return policies. The most you'll be out is $20ish for Samp;H...
I'm working on one... still torn on what color to paint the damn thing. I have 2 Gibson SG Juniors. They each have one P-90 in them. I absolutely love them. I bought them a couple of years ago from Musicians Friend for $399 each. They're probably the best deal I've ever gotten on guitars to be as awesome as they are.
I have the same GAS, just because of Robbie Krieger
I have SG with P90 gas also, Because of P90's in general.... And a certain Mr.Iommi. (This is like a AA meeting)

Hey MikeS, is that some Warmoth stuff? I'm jonsing bad to build a Warmoth guitar. That looks sweet!

Ok, I had to post the dream creation.

Go pick up The Who quot;Live at Leedsquot; or quot;Live at the Isle of Wightquot; and you can hear P90's in all their glory. AMAZING!!!!!
Speaking of Iommi, I think he only used P90's on Vol 4.
I have a '67 SG with P90s. It's dark cherry red and have a trem on it. When I compared it to the GC/MF SGs, mine seems to be much heavier in weight and it sounds with more mid and more solid, but I am comparing the P90s to the humbuckers though. I can't find any SG with P90s in the two GCs near by.
P-90s are the best!

Don, can you get a wide variety of tones with just one pickup?
P90s kick major a$$.....ive played alot of P90s, and the Phat Cat sounds great.....i love the variety of sound i get, i basically use the bridge position only on my les paul, and the clarity is great, thats what i like so much about P90s

I believe the monkey wrench SG was one of his earlier guitars, with P90(s)...they sound fatter through a cranked non-master amp.
And in other random Sabbath stuff, check this out: from : localhost/www.bigomagazine.com/archive/...ksbasbury.html

That's totally incorrect. I've owned ****loads of Gibsons, many from these big guys, including MF. THey are the same hit amp; miss as any other Gibson. If there's more QC issues from MF I'd chalk it up to pure numbers. They deal in more Gibsons than anyone else so the number of guitars with QC issues will also be higher. But they are not making cheaper guitars fo MF under the guise of a regular Gibson.
FWIW I just sold an SG Classic and I thought it was a fantastic guitar, very nice wood and QC was top notch and yep, it was a recent 2005 MF exclusive SG Classic. I only sold it to pick up a custom shop LP DC in TV white for my P90 guitar.

He used P90's on both Vol 4.(which has my favorite lead tone ever, the beggining of wheel of confusion) and on the self titled.

Nice looking SG. I didn't realize MF was selling the Classic's in that darker stain. All of the models I have seen were a bright red quot;heritage cherryquot;. How much did you sell that baby for?
