in the previous sg thread i promised to show you what the short tenon SGs looked like..there's really nothing to see from what I can tell-While I'm at it I'd love some input on restoring the 61 and wanted to know if anyone has rebuilt pup pokets for p90s- this is a LP special that had p90s but someone routed for dimarzios in the early 70s-Id like to go back to p90s and refinish while I'm at it-

It probably was cherry or white and if I went with white that might cover up the surgery on the pup pockets- any ideas?
Cheers

It looks pretty nasty in there.

yeah, lets assume it was someones first time with a chisel-
the grungie looking stuff is black overspary-
the outside looks great but obviously this wasnt a rare bird when it was modified-

On a genuine 61' SG....I'd contact someone like Dan Erlwine for info on restoring to P90's and refinish. He might not have the time or inclination to do the job, but he will know someone who can, and he should be able to give you a ballpark on the cost.

As far as a nitro finish goes....Dawn at Naked Body Guitars (she did the paid for Seymours Tele gift) does top notch work, and has done several restoration paint jobs on early/mid 60's strats. She charges about $600 for a strat body and neck, maybe more for a set neck. However, it's worth it on an instrument of that value.

If it were mine, I'd figure $1000-$1500 for a top notch restoration to P-90's and a new finish.

thanks for the leads jeff but not likely I will pay someone else as it's totaly modded- baddass in place of vibrolux, grovers, and we've already talked about the pups- so if I decide to do anything, I'll probably do it-

sure wish they'd kept original hardware, but for the early 70s they made it a very playable axe-

Sometimes you have to look real hard for the tenon, if it's a tight fit you can easily miss it. I have circled what looks to me like the neck tenon.good eye! now that you've pointed it out it almost has to be where you drew it-
anyway, i think it shows that this wasn't a strong neck, but i love the feel anyway-

if you want to restore it my friend and luthier can do it with his eyes closed and you will never know it was modded before. his work is BEYOND top notch and he knows gibsons inside out. give him a call....Cris Mirabella you can tell him i sent you his way.

-Mike

thanks xssive-
just might give him a buzz- still expecting the vintage hardware will put this out of budget, but cant hurt to ask, eh?
cheers

-MikeListen to Mike..... Nobody does this as well as Cris. He takes quot;oldquot; '54 LP and converts them to '59 specs. Go to the Les Paul Forum and do a search for his name. You will see some unbelievable creations of what he does.

Why would it show that it's not a strong neck join? There's not a crack anywhere in there- Even considering a chunk of wood was removed to put in the humbuckers.

My 59 Special had been modded and was put back to stock. The guy who redid it (I heard it was quot;Axe In Handquot;) replaced the entire section of wood, as deep as the routs from the fretboard to the bridge. If you look hard, you can see it, but it's TV finished. Anyway, the only places I would consider stressed on that guitar are behind the nut and right before the heel. The TV finish shows stress.

That is a nice and tight neck tenon there...no gaps to be found.
