Hi ppl i am not sure which one to get in the future for my replacement. A Distortion or Custom? I have search in the forum and there are mixed opinions........ which one is better for new age heavy metal?

Which is in favour for alder body guitars?

Thanks in Advance!

I would think the distortion would be better for the metal stuff. Or you could always just get both.

What is New Age Heavy Metal? I just installed a Custom and through a Rectifier it sounds like post-grunge heavy rock. All the bands that play in drop tuning through a Mesa.

For newer metal the distortion will be the winner. The custom is my most favorite bridge bucker but, it has a bit of a classic vibe to it compared to the DD.

I would be suing this pickup for playing stuff like SHadows Fall, Chimaira, Machine Head, Arch Enemy and Iron Maiden. Mostly thrash metal but the modern kind. Exodus is on the list, Unearth ..........

SH-6 or SH-5.........

Distortion, the guy from Mastodon uses it if that helps/

hey better is very subjective so let me go this route
custom= very good for many styles, as versilte as a JB ,has a very good output but not over the top, has a big tight bass response, and is aggressive when pushed real good balanced tone real big P.A.F tone
think older Eddie van halen tone on steriods
the DD is like a EMG 81 in that it is very aggressive, has a mean ass growl when pushed, has mucho harmonics,is very clear and is tight
george lynch and randy rhoads used these but those tones are not TRADEMARK duncan distortion sounds, it really has to be tried through your own guitar/amp/effects to really appreciate it
so if you like a metal tone that say's DADDY'S home! get a custom
if you like a metal tone that says I am here to rip off your head then get a DD

Both are pretty aggressive, but I think the Distortion is better suited for the crunchy metal tone used by the bands you listed. Like Wicked said, the Custom is more PAF-ish (but way hotter). I like both pickups, but for your needs I'd definitely go with the Distortion.

Then it is the Distortion for Grabs! CHEERS! for everyone for submitting there opinions!

Enjoy!

Custom = Distortion Lite.

Both are great pickups. One just has a little more oomph to it.

Hey guys!

Does quot;oomphquot; means that the Custom has more bass? I've had trouble with a DD in my Les Paul because, when on clean settings, I had a huge difference on the bass between the DD and the middle and neck positions on the switch (I left the original neck PU). It was impossible to use! Any opinion on this?

Check out my review of the distortion vs. the custom custom. Might help, might not!
