i'm looking for versatility, rock/metal mostly, but will do lighter/funkier things, too.
so what do you guys nornally use? hotter neck, smoother bridge?

I think that a Vintage P at the neck and a Jazzz stack at the bridge would cover all th bases (no pun intended).
Seriously though, I haven't seen to many bass players go with hot pickups for any style. In fat, when I record, my stock Rick does pretty much everything with the single coils that are in there (and they're pretty bright and low output).
