k, how many think he had a good tone?

and in adition, you think that the majority of it came from the fact that he used the pickups upside down?

discuss

Hay' Davey, Hendrix's Upside down magnet staggers and and that reverse angled bridge posistion did add --and-or-- subtract things. but IMHO it was not at all why he sounded like he did and its just being used as something to have fun with and help sales in some ways.
Yet Hendrix also used a flying V and sounded like Hendrix to me.

As far as tone-- I would skip the Fuzz face-- that thing fried the tone and you need low DC pups to help that thing cut thru all the mud it creates.. luckly Hendrix's pups were said to be around 6 K
Then for tone listen to little Wing or Axis Bold as love CD-- Hendrix set the standard for years ahead as far as Stratocaster tone..

Hendrix's Live tone was pretty scratchy--crackling and harsh, especially asulting on the ear drums.

Hendrix's Studio tone was KILLER very nice stuff. way ahead of its time.

Trower / SRV was the first (after loosing Hendrix) to do the best job of getting that sound

I think it is possible to get close to the tone of Hendrix with pickups that aren't reversed. I think you may also lose some of the very subtle differences. I think you could get pretty close with a set of Antiquitys.

The greatest difference, I suspect, would be in the bridge pickup. Not only would the stagger be different, but the bass strings would be brighter and the treble strings would be a little darker.

Hendrix' tone could be debated, but the main thing to me was how artistic his whole approach to the instrument was, and how he used the tools he had to get there.

I think he had good tone (in the studio and clean), but I don't think most of it was from pickup reversal; there are too many other parts of his signal chain, not to mention the player himself, for the pickups to be the major factor in his tone.

I love Hendrix's live tone.

It sounds like a hard rockin strat should.
Very ballsy on chords, but sings when playing leads. (Or so thats how it sounded to my ears)
