Hey chief, have you tried EL-34's in your rectoverb yet? I'm probably going to be ordering new tubes for my amp next week, and was wondering if you'd tried any EL-34's and what kind of character they give the amp that the 6L6's don't...I think I'll probably go with the 6L6's for the bass response, but before I made up my mind wanted some advice from someone with practical experience
My amp is a series I so there's no bias switch for EL34/6L6 operation, I can only run 6L6 tubes.
I have a Tremoverb and since switching to EL34's I can't see myself switching back (alright I might give some good 6L6's a try). My amp originally came with the Mesa 430 6L6's which I found to be very harsh and brittle sounding. The cleans were very glassy but I couldn't get the sound I was looking for on clean or dirty channels. I switched to EH EL34's (the preamp tubes were unchanged) and the amp sounded great. Everything was more round and full. The cleans warmed up but retained the shimmer. The crunch was better than ever, not so scooped sounding. Good bass, mids and highs. The EL34's have provided me with exactly the sound I was looking for from a recto. However I may have to try some good 6L6's (JJ6L6's) and see what they sound like, from what I've heard the stock Mesa 430's aren't the best.
