I played a LP standard yesterday at Guitar Center. Wow did it sound amazing!! It had the 50s neck.. They had the same axe with the 60s neck, but do to time restraints, I didnt get to play that one.I did feel the neck . I was expecting a big dif, but I really couldnt feel any.. One felt alittle deeper into my palm.. Which is the most like a new studio in shape??Thankss
The 50’s Standard neck is very close in shape to the ‘59 Rounded neck found on the LP Studio models. Play both the 50’s/60’s necks for a while- you will begin to notice a significant difference. I’m not a fan of the shallow 60’s/slim taper necks, though you might find that they suit your hands/style.
The 50s' is just thicker
I like the 50's necks. I suppose if I had smaller hands, the 60's would work, but if I play both guitars for an extended period of time, the 60's neck will start to make my left thumb muscle sore, especially playing rhythm guitar. At one point, I had a Std 50's and a Classic 60. The 60's sounded a bit thinner and brighter, and didn't sustain as well as the LP std 50's.......and both had the same pickups.
I find my studio neck to be darn near perfect, so if the 50's neck is similar, then that is what I would stick with. I was getting some amazing sweet tone out of the standard.. Was sure hard to put it back on the wall..
I'm the dissenting opinion here...I never liked ANY les pauls I played until I felt the 60s neck. In fact, I went from never even dreaming of buying ANY Gibson until I played a Classic and then I just freakin HAD TO HAVE ONE! Funny how that happens. It is my favorite axe to play these days (quot;Nothing quite like the feeling of something newquot;). The 60s neck is thin without being super skinny. It feels a lot like my old Ibanez AM-50's neck. It feels more like a strat C neck, but a little flatter. Big thumbs up from me...
