(yes yes, i know they've been making them since mid '62 but it just struck me as funny .. cary on)
Ah? There's more than 1 size? Can you show pics? I only know the moustache (Lp/sg/acoustic), the arrow(V's) and the banana (explorer)... well, ok and the gumby (on the futura's I think).
I'm not sure of the actual time line of big, and little haedstock Les Paul's. My '78 Les Paul Deluxe, has a big headstock, and my '82 30th Anniversary Les Paul has a small headstock. If you want an exact answer, go the the Les Paul Forum, there are some very knowlegable people there. www.lespaulforum.com

the big headstock started in late 69 I think, then in about 71-72 gibson had the 50's reissues with the smaller headstock. but the big headstocks lasted to the late 80's. I think they went small in the early 90's

Though there have been two main Gibson USA “small” headstocks in recent times. The first was the shape that can be found on Standards prior to 2002 (this slightly larger than vintage* shape introduced in the 80’s can still be found on LP Studios and most of the SG range). The other was the closer to vintage shape found on the Classic series (1990- slightly modified in ‘93). The Classic and the post 2002 Standard both now use this shape. It seems that Gibson likes a truer to vintage head when fitting Kluson style tuners.
