When people describe pickups as glassy, what does this mean!?!?!?! and also, what songs best illustrate a glassy guitar tone?
bump
The Fixx - great strat player with an ultimate quot;glassyquot; sound. Very clean.
I usually think of strats when I think of quot;glassquot;.
I think a Strat in the 4th position played through a Roland Jazz Chorus 120 would be about as quot;glassyquot; as it gets.
59 have pretty glassy tone too...
When I think glassy, I think of a Tele's lipstick pickup. As far as humbuckers, I think the Jazz neck is the glassiest.
Glassy means that chimey bubbley lively tone you hear from SRV when he plays Lenny, Riviera Paradise or Little Wing...or when Mark Knopfler plays his classic tones on Sultans Of Swing or Clapton when he played his 50's Strats. It's the sound of an alnico 5 staggered polepiece 50's or 60's pickup. The Duncan SSL-1 gets that tone in spades and it's my favorite Strat tone.

I don't hear any paf or full sized humbuckers as having a glassy tone and IMO that term shouldn't be applied to humbuckers. Only Single Coils. Lew
