Just put it in the neck of my alder/maple tele and it sounds awesome! very clear and smooth and sounds very good clean and overdriven. the hi notes are so crisp and there is hardly any muddyness in the low end great pup.

Thanks guys for your help,
now all i need is a bridge pup to match the stock is way lower in output compared to the phat cat, i was thinking a broadcaster but im guessing it wont be loud enough to balance?

i might try a jd tele pup. a little extra output and a little extra mids will help balance the phat cat. youll still probably want to keep the cat a little low and raise the bridge up to get a decent balance. hard to say since i have the two pups in different guitars but i think with the right setup they will balance nicely

....mmmmm.... p90 in a tele...... I'd like to hear one of them at the bridge, too.

Jeremy's recommendation is right on the money. I have been using a Phat Cat paired with a Jerry Donahue Tele lead in an ash/RW Tele for awhile now, and it's an excellent combination. I run the JD very close to the strings to keep up with the PC, but it works well and enhances the mids of the JD. You can tweak the heights to make it work, and the combination turns out to be hum-canceling. I think the PC is the best neck match for the JD when all is said and done.

Is the JD a vintage sounding pup with good hi end bite? or is more in the direction of a quarter pounder/tele hot.

It is a moderately overwound vintage-style pickup, modeled after a particular '52 Tele pickup. It's slightly hotter than vintage, but not as hot as the Hot Tele or 1/4 lb. It has alnico 2 magnets, so it has an airy rather than steely high end. Although there is plenty of high end, I don't think it has a lot of bite -- I think you need something with alnico 3 or 5 mags to get that steely biting Tele sound. I also think you'll need at least a moderately overwound Tele lead pickup to balance with Phat Cat. If you don't want alnico 2 in the bridge, then perhaps something like the Fralin Blues Special lead pup would work. However, if you like the PC, I think you'd really like the balance and complementary lead tone of the JD.
