I can save an xls as a csv comma-delimited file, but I don't think its in the
ASCII format and can't find ASCII on the list of save as file formats.

Select FILE from the menu and click SAVE AS. From the SAVE AS dialog box
drop down the selection list for the SAVE AS TYPE combo box. Select CSV
(comma delimited)(*.csv) as the file type.

The csv file I made did not work (as a class properties file in Fragstats),
and I could try a txt file instead but I see no options in Excel for
comma-delimited txt files (only tab or space). Any suggestions out there?

Do you have MS Access on your PC. If you do you can either link to
spreadsheet as a table or import your excel data into a table. From Access
you would have a wider array of choice for exporting your data to a text file.
