Hey all, I am getting a new guitar for Christmas, so I decided to look into some strats. One that really sparked my interest was the classic series 50 strat. Now after reading some reviews some people say it is made of poplar if you get it in a solid color, others say all of them are made of alder.

I was wondering if that was just pre-2000 all the solid color ones were made of poplar, since the majority of the reviews saying poplar are from 1997-99.

Thanks!

if you buy a new one it's alder...older ones could be either way...

these seem like nice guitars for the money, but I'd suggest playing a few to see if you really like the vintage spec necks, compared to US strats

or look into TGWIFs favorite inexpensive strat, the JV

right now they're making the MIM 50s strats in shoreline gold. very tempting...

Yeah, Curly's right. I had a similar question, and am now planning to get the Jimmie Vaughan Tex-Mex Strat. Read more:

The MIM 50's Strats are nice but like Curly said I am a big fan of the JV...in fact the JV is my fav Strat reguardless of cost! It is a lot like the 50's Strat but with better pickups, tuners, tremolo, and neck shape as well as it has a satin finish neck, 9.5 inch radius and MJ frets...it costs a little bit more but IMO it's well worth it. All that said the MIM 50's Strat is a damn nice guitar for the money and is also well worth the money.

I'm really stuck between these two, the 50s and the JV. I like the soft-V shape neck, and I have a guitar now with a 9.5quot; radius neck, so I wanted to see how I like a 7.25quot;. I was planning on eventually upgrade most if not all the parts to get the most tone I could out of it...but really the thing that is making me want the 50s strat more is the surf green color

You should never chose a guitar based on colour...

I will say that both guitars are fine but the JV has far better hardware, pickups and electronice...IMO the JV is very playable right out of the box with no mods at all...Jimmy Vaughan thinks so too! The 50's needs new pickups and electronics and could also use better keys and a better tremolo. As for the radius and frets is all a matter of opinion. Play some stuff before you decide. FWIW...the JV will have a MUCH better resale value!

I know, I need to find a way to stop the GAS for certain colors...but anyway, I'm going to try out the JV and the 50s again at guitar center. This'll be the third time this week I've tried them, I can't seem to tell which one I like better.

EDIT: Also whats the routing on both of these guitars, another factor toward which one I will get.

The Classic 50s is most likely SSS, as the JV is HSS.

I'm not a big fan of the radius on the 50s Strat though. I know it's a personal thing, but I've never liked the 7.25quot;.
