I enter a text function in excel 2003, correct syntax, but instead of showing
the result the cell continues to show the function. Calculation options don't
affect the result. For example, if cell A2 is quot;AL TOTALquot; and I enter
quot;=left(A2,2)quot; in another cell, I should get just quot;ALquot;. Instead I sometimes
get the function quot;=left(A2,2)quot; shwoing indefinitiely. This seems to happen
with large spreadsheets.

Ensure the cell format is not text. Change it to General, then click on your
cell, hit F2 (to go into edit mode) and Enter.
