Why is that the Gibson explorer is advertised as the '76 Explorer and the Epi version is called the '58? Whats the difference?

What do y'all think of them? I already have an SM-1 in the neck of my 50's style solid paired with a Jerry Donahue at the bridge. I also have a MIJ 69 Thinline re-issue that I put a Hot Tele set into, and while cool, I was thinking of doing something a little more left of center.
