When I want to go to a new line within a cell and hit ALT ENTER it
automatically goes to the next cell. I've tried it with both ALT keys and
neither work.

Has anyone come across this problem before and if so, is there something I
can set to fix the problem.

If you open excel in safe mode:

Close excel
windows start button|run
type:
excel /safe
and hit enter.

Does the alt-enter work there (while you're changing a cell)?

I'm guessing that you may have a macro that has alt-enter as a short cut key.
