What formula do I use to total cells that contain either of these two
characters?

For W or L in Col_A

To count W's:
=COUNTIF(A:A,quot;Wquot;)

To sum both W and L in ur range

=COUNTIF(RANGE,quot;Lquot;) COUNTIF(RANGE,quot;Wquot;)
