I just won a Digitech Valve FX unit on ebay. I hate digital effects except for this bad boy. A friend in high school owned one and it ruled. Anyone else own one of these? What do you think about them?

New Vintage Metal Tone?
I know a question like this is guaranteed to receive some flack, but...here goes: Is anybody familiar with the mainstream pop-metal tone circa 1981-82? Specifically, the KISS quot;Creatures of The Nightquot; rhythm and lead tone(s)? I know on that particular album they had several different lead players, but all of them had a very hollow, mid-rangey tone which I love. Even if you listen to other lead players from that era (especially on pop songs) there is a similar tone. Seems that in the entire two year span (with the exception of EVH, who has always been so unique anyway), there was a certain quot;soundquot; engineered by most studios. Was most of it just the result of stock Marshalls through post-effects signal processing and EQ? Any input would be truly appreciated. The only device to ever come close to reproducing this type of tone, in my experience anyway, is the Digitech RP-1 factory patch #77, entitled, quot;Rippin' Soloquot;.

why an acoustic amp?
I was at sam ash yesterday and i was plugging an acoustic electric into an electric guitar amp. the guy that worked there literally took the guitar out of my hand and said quot;you don't want to do that, you plug these into the amps over therequot;. I looked at him like he was retarded and told him flat out quot;this is what i want this amp for, i'm an electric player first and i want one amp to do bothquot; (I have been doing this for a while with my current set up) he goes on to say quot;oh this one will give you a better soundquot; it was an amp i tried just previous to that one and decided against it.

Dimarzio Evolution/Tone Zone
so i went to sam ash today, and i was gonna get a set of pearly gates. i wasnt really sure what sound i was after, but i thought a billy gibbons sound would be nice. i talked to the salesman at sam ash and he was a good guy and he was explaining to me how the evolution sounded and i thought it might be something id want. so he tried out an ibanez for me which had the ibz pickups in it, just to give me some sort of idea what to expect. i loved the sound he was getting through the jsx head. so i decided to buy the evolution bridge and the tone zone bridge, that going in the neck posiition for my lp. i really like the sound im getting from them. im thinking ill raise the evo's height a bit because the tone zone is louder right now, but other than that minor problem it is awesome. the evo has great definition and clarity under high gain. when playing more than 1 string at time, you can hear each note individually. it was a world of difference compared to the 500t. the tone zone is decent. its not an awesome pickup, but i like it. it gives nice sustain and a nice sound that i can use. my lp can sound very similar to the steve vai song quot;jibboomquot; now. this is prolly a bad example, but im not familiar with any other pieces by him.

1959slp and 1987xl comparison?
Hello all!
Im trying to decide which amp is right for me that ill purchase in the near future used. Other than the 'new' cost factor the 1959 being 2000 and the 1987 being 1600, and the wattage. What are the differences in thes amps tone wise and breakup wise? Ive heard the 1959 is quot;woodierquot;? and i dont really understand what the 1987 is like tone wise. Also, what is the usual wattage both of these amps start to overdrive and break up at... and what should each go for 'roughly' used on ebay?

How does a floyd rose affect tone?
I am looking into getting a guitar and it comes in a couple of different versions. One has a string thru bridge and the other a floyd rose. I am wondering what are the tonal differences between the two. I will likley need the floyd rose for what i am going to be working on. I have one axe with a stop bar like a les paul. The strat has a non floyd floating trem but i do not think adjusting it it would be too good for pulling a note two whole steps sharp. Opinions and experiance please share.

Spina SD-1 First Impressions
I just got this pedal in the mail and was extremely excited to finally try it out and see if it lived up to all the forum hype. I will not get to try it through my cranked JCM 800 until my next band practice but I was able to use it with my pod xt, peavy classic 50/50, vht cab setup. The guitars that were used were my ESP Viper (Screamin Deamon and 59n) and SG (EMG 81-85). My first impression of this pedal is WOW, Zakk Wylde should have sent his SD-1 to John instead of have his signiture pedal made. This pedal's tone is all BALLS and ****. I have a TS-9 modded by John which I compared it too (pretty high standard to meet). Comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges because both are great pedals, but I generally like apples better and I prefer the SD-1 to the TS-9 for most situations. The Spina's TS-9 has a great thick tonal range with tons of mids; however I usually limited it's use to a solo boost because the mid hump made my tone too smooth for rhythm work. On the same settings Level 2:00, Tone 1:00, Drive 9:00 the SD-1 has a different character which I prefer. This pedal has a hotter, crunchier, rawer, and more defined tone than the TS-9. I would say it sounds like the TS-9 on steroids. The SD-1 does not have a huge mid spike like the TS-9; instead it sounds like the treble and bass are increased more than the mids which translates into a more jagged tone than the smooth tone of the TS-9. I have to say that I think that a single coil type guitar like a strat might benifit more form the characteristics of the TS-9 but I like the SD-1 through the humbucker equiped guitars that I tried. These statements are just my opinion and keep in mind I have not had more than one hour to test these pedals out. I will have to test it through the Marshall to be sure but I think that I will be using this pedal all the time as a pre-amp buffer pedal (like some use the DS-1). I really need to stop playing and typing and get to studying, but I just wanted to give John credit where credit is due. He really made this pedal sound much thicker tonally than the stock pedal, and now I have exactly what I want. I know that John hears how great his work is all the time but I also know that it feels good to hear it again. Thank you John for helping me get better tone.
