Don't remember the actual number right now.

So I bought this pup from Christian about 2 weeks ago and I absolutely LOVE it. It is essentially an unaged Texas Hot. Christian said he didn't like the pup because it sounded too beefy. That's the reason I love it.

Last night I got to use it at practice and it sang.

The Bridge/Middle tone is thick, but still good spank and chime. Sounds great with medium to heavy OD/Dist. I like using that position for overdriven rythym sounds and some leads.

When you switch over to the bridge pup alone you get a bit of a kick and obviously the cut that comes from the position. Like most strat pups it cuts right through the mix, but the alnico 2 magnets keep the brightness under control while dishing out some very thick strat tones, the pup crunches very well, and when you reign in the gain you still have good cluck and quack at your disposal. The pup will still let you dish out some surf tunes with authority without the harsh strat bridge pup sound.

All and all, a keeper!

Luke

Very cool!

For those that care about Single Coils

I like this idea. Was it wound with #43 wire?

Excellent review. I'm with you on wanting to tame the brightness in a Strat. Sounds like it gives you plenty of options.

Jeff

Great pickups, IMO! I have the Tapped Tele version in my Strat and it's the hottest, most toneful pickup I have in any my Strats. Thanks for the review! Lew

What do you adding a steel base plate would do to the sound?

I have the Albert Lee sig set in my strat but would like a touch more beef from the bridge. I might want to get the bridge pickup rewound to the specs you listed, but it does have an embedded steel bar underneath.

Would it be TOO fat?

Benjy, it would be similiar to Beandip's Antiquity hot Twangbanger I think it would still sound good, but it might be to fat sounding if you want a lot of quack.

Luke

I've heard this pickup in person and, though I don't usually care for singles, this one is pretty good. quot;Beefyquot; is the best description I can come up with for it, too. It's like a crazed bull you'll want to jump out of the way of.

That's too bad. I love the chime and twang I get in pos. 4.

I imagine if you took off subtracted 1K you would land in the right tonal area.

Luke

The pickup is wound with number 43 wire, and it is one mean mutha for a Strat pickup...I have found that I prefer my Strat bridge pickups to be a little less hot that that one...the 4th position is still sort of chimey, but I wanted it to be more chimey.

Luke, Im glad you like the pickup and glad it has a good home!

It's only because you are more picky than me!!! Worry not, it is in safe hands!

Man, you were up early this morning!

Luke

That sounds a lot like a Fender Texas Special the way you describe it.

Doesn't sound much like a Fender Texas Speical. Alot more mids and less bite to the treble than the FTS.

Dang, and the FTS have plenty of mids already.

LukeIm not too picky...I just know what will work for me! :fing25:

As for being up early...I am now sub contracting HVAC work and have to be on the job (35-40 miles away) by 8am, ans Atlanta traffic SUCKS...so I have been getting up a little earlier.

Give me a call this weekend, we'll catch up.

sounds like a great pup!!

Dashing,
There is much less bite and grit in my pup than the FTS, it is much smoother across the frequency range.Originally Posted by the guy who invented fireIm not too picky...I just know what will work for me! :fing25:
