Hello fellow toners. I am thinking about upgrading my ad50 combo to a ad60 head and 2 12 inch speaker cabinet, and i'm wondering if this combo would be to loud for bedroom use. The head has a power attenuator, so I'm good there, my only concern is the level required to drive two speakers versus just the one I currently have in my 50 combo. What do you all think? Would I be better with a single 12 inch cabinet?
You'd be better with a 1x12, but a 2x12 wouldn't be too much with the wattage selector.
The extra speaker would make it 3dB louder if I recall. I would go with the 1x12 cab if it it'll only sit in your room. 2x12 if you plan on starting a band.
The 50 has a jack for an extension cab..or are you looking for the upgraded/extra features of the 60?
Hey Jeff, I am nearing the end of my guitar center 30 day trial period and like the extra options the 60 watt head offer over the 50 watt combo. I am trying to make an informed descion based on the input I get from my fellow toners. With the power output adjustment on the amp, I know that won't be a problem I am just trying to figure out which cabinet would best suit bedroom practice sessions, A 2 12 or a 1 12 Thanks for your input.

Totally understand... the 60/120 watt models do have a bunch of cool extras..if nothing else the presence control, and the ability to mix and match effects are huge steps up.
For bedroom stuff, a 1x12 w/ the right speaker would be plenty, however if gigging is in the mix for the future a 2x12 would prolly be a better purchase in the long run.
Hey Jeff, do you think the 2 12 cabinet would be to loud for bedroom use?

well..depends on the bedroom, what kind of place the bedroom is in, and the neighbors understanding of a guitarists need for tone, I reckon
IMO, anything over 10 watts probably is too loud for bedroom use in reality. I think with the variable wattage though that a 2x12 would prolly be OK espcially if the 1x12 you have now at 50 watts is acceptable.
The power attenuator on the AD50 is actually alot more flexible the the AD60. As you know the AD50 has a dial that smoothly turns up and down like a volume knob for power attenuation. The AD-60 is stepped from 1 watt, to 15 watts, to 30 watts, to 60 watts. You have to select one setting. The AD-50 will actually allow you to go below 1 watt or to 5 watts or 10 watts or anywhere on the dial. From my experience with my AD-60 combo cranked on the one watt setting (the lowest possible) is loud enough for the neighbors to notice in an apartment setting.
The AD-60 is a killer amp and has advantages over the AD-50, even though it's attenuator isn't as flexible (IMO). I think the reverb is way better on the AD60 and it has more effects, delays, ect. And you can save a grip load of pre-sets. If you can play as loud as a stereo blasting, you can crank it on the one watt setting. Actually the more I think about it, the AD-60 either sounds good at TV volume on higher gain settings (one watt with master below 12 o'clock) or cranked, IMO it doesn't sound good at inbetween volume. One 12quot; speaker is fine in my combo at home.
The number of speakers actually has no percievable impact on volume given the output wattage of the amps is the same (sure, there's a theoretical 3db, but you'll have to practically be Superman to tell the difference).
At bedroom level volumes, I honostly do not think that you'll here a difference between a 50 watt (I'm assuming, given the model neam) 1x12 and a 60 watt 2x12. The 2x12 isn't necessarily too loud, but it is way beyond overkill, IMO, for practice use.
It'll sound fine. I think you should go back and swap the combo for the head.
I've found that the heavy sounding amp models perform much better in a closed back 2-12. Out of all the amps I've ever heard, the Vox modelers have the best sounding highgain at the lowest volume levels. The better your cabinet is, the better the amp will sound.
Thanks for all the input. Vox makes an ad 212 cabinet, but not a 112. Given the width of the head the 212 will match nicely.
I would have loved to have my current practice setup, as a kid. In the 80's, all we had were tube amps that needed to be loud, and Solid State amps that sounded crap.
Trying to get Boss pedals into a SS amp to sound good was nearly impossible.
I'm still a fan of tube amps primarily, but Line 6 and Vox are finally getting solid state to sound good. Personally, I prefer 2-12 and 4-12 cabs over 1-12 combos, but only because they handle the lows better. I can get my practice rig (AD60 Bogner
2-12) to sound just like my Ecstasy head, but with the 6W or 15W setting, my neighbors don't even hear it. Try that with the Ecstasy halfstack, and you'll see the sheetrock walls crumble into baby powder! LOL
