Alright, so I got a Dimebucker for my Les Paul, and I attempted to wire it up myself... well, everything went fine until I noticed that the pickup would gradually lose and then regain volume, I fooled around and found out that it was the volume pot causing the trouble... we've got a show coming up in about a week and a half, and we needed to practice so I said quot;I'll just bypass it for now and I'll get a new volume pot in a few days and replace itquot;.
Ok, so its been a few days, I decided I would just take my tone control(since I don't really use it for the bridge position anyways) and make it the new volume pot, and reconnect everything later. So I got done a few minutes ago, plugged up, but now eveything is so MUDDY! It wasn't like this before, I'm going to take it to a professional(since I'm a dumbass) and let them fix it.
So my questions are... how much do you think it'll cost me, what do you think the problem is(I suspect the soldering is a bit shoddy), and will not having my tone control affect the sound(since pots roll off some of the highs)?
Also I want to mention that I took the capacitor(or whatever its called) off of the pot before I re-soldered everything. Its safe to say that I wont be going on anymore 'adventures' in the near or distant future.
Thanks.
Wow, you're brave! Firstly, I must warn you I'm no expert, so don't consider what I say as 'written in stone' or anything. There's no difference between a volume pot and tone pot. The reason, I think, you were having trouble with muddiness is that you took the pot (I'm guessing 500k) out of the tone point. 500k pots boost the higher frequencies and you disabled that. Hence, muddiness.
It shouldn't cost you barely anything. New pot is like £3 ($6) plus basic soldering job.
Finally, you definately need a tone pot. For the reasons I was banging on about before.
Hope this reletively good news helps you relax a little.
Thank you for your reply, I really want to know too, about how much it would cost me to get it replaced, as far as installation goes(I'm just gonna go ahead and get both replaced to be completely sure). I know it is impossible for anyone except the repair guy to give me an exact price, but I'd like to have a good idea of what its going to cost me before I wake up tomorrow, so I can figure out how I'm gonna come up with the money, haha. Thanks again.
Get what replaced? do you mean the pot or the pickup?
Both of the pots... just an estimate.
sorry about the delay. I've just been re-wiring my brother's LP. Seriously, it will cost hardly anything. less than a tenner here in the U.K. so, i'd guess, if you're in the U.S. under $15 for the parts. Labour costs will be a bit more, but not by much. It's a very quick and easy job. I would be a bit sceptical if you're charged more than $25/$30 tops. Tto be honest, I don't really know because I tend to do most of these smaller jobs myself.
Thanks, I took it to the shop today... $35.90 incl. parts. I'll have it back tomorrow @ 10 am.
