i was wondering if i could just clip my old hot wires and connect the hotwires of the new pups to those instead of soldering them directly to the switch. Thanks.

yep, of course you can...just make sure pups are well grounded. i've done 3 sets of pups in my les paul this way..no buzzing or anything.
Yes you can but you should still solder the old and new wires together and tape or shrink wrap them off.
