I'm just curious what exactly makes a pup a bridge pup or a neck pup. Obviously output and voicing play a role. But what if for instance you have a high output bridge pup and you want a commonly used lower output pup for the neck like a jazz or an A2P. What makes a A2P n better than a A2P b when mixed with a higher output bridge pup. Also what are your opinions on pups that absolutely don't sound good in the neck, for example the JB is quot;preferred for bridge positionquot; but I know it can sound great in the neck.
Good question - i've always wondered that myself. Why is there a DD neck but not a JB neck?
I guess a good combo would be a DD neck with an A5 to make it a JB lite, and a regular JB in the bridge.
when a pup is designed, especially like the aph where there is a matched pair, the neck and bridge models are made to sound balanced and work well togeather.
the matching neck pup for a jb is the jazz neck
as far as what sounds good, i think almost anything besides the very high output bridge pups could be used in the neck of the right guitar. there are no rules
For what its worth, I paired a DDn with a JB in the bridge, and it didn't work very well. The DD, even though it was a neck version, overpowered the JB. I swapped the JB for a Duncan Custom, which is also a ceramic magnet, and that combo is great.
So much so, that I doubt I'll ever change that guitar again. It's all set!
On the other hand, I like a Stag Mag better in the neck position. And its considered a bridge pup.
IMO: Where YOU put it. I usea JB @ the neck with a Custom at the bridge, and it works fine. In another guitar I use a Dirty Fingers at the Neck with a Dimebucker at the bridge, and in yet another I use a 59 NECK at the bridge because it fits the single coils so much better.
It´s ALL personal preference
