I'm looking at a telecaster, I've never actually played one because my friends said they were bad. But all the talk around here has changed my opinion, so I was wondering what are some good models, I'd like it under $1600 AUD, so about $1000 American. Any other info on them would be great, thanks.
Seriously, don't listen to anybody, listen to the guitar.
Try some out. You should be able to find a really kickass Tele for $1,000 US.
Don't limit yourself to only new guitars. Play a bunch.
You can get a nice MIA for half that...maybe slightly more. Teles are awesome. No offnense, but your 16 year old peers are not the ones to be taking guitar advice from.Obviously.
So I can't give him advice then? Some of use 16-17ers do know things like: you can play metal without amp burning pickups; there's more to life than endless power chords; a guitar can make a sound called quot;cleanquot;; and so on.
Personally, I don't like teles, but that's purely a form thing. As the others said... try them out, and see what you like. Don't buy a tele because it's a tele, buy it because you like the guitar.

Good advice! But then I do love Tele's....and Strats....LP's.....Jr.s.......what where we talking about........
To quote the Rev Billy G, quot;It's in the hands, brah. Not necessarily dependant on any particular guitar or any particular amp. I've seen junker solid bodies transformed into solid body gems, thanks to the grip of the hands.quot;
you should play one and see if you are comfortable with it. i love teles for its sheer versatility and simplicity. simply no frills approach and yet able to cover metal to country!
oz has quite a good market for used guitars. besides american-made, don't leave out some mij teles like fender japan, fernandes, tokai and greco especially those from the early 80s. those are real good quality axes with a good price.
A used Muddy Waters or James Burton tele would be a great start and well under 500 USD. I've always been in love with teles and you should just go play some.
Advice from others is really tough to judge. A blanket statement about teles is also unfair to make. Just look at the variety of teles here, Stevo has one on the current board, check out Krankguitarist's, Check out Rev Donzo/Buckcannon's, Xssessive also has a few-none of which are stock and all are hot guitars. They are as different as people themselves.
Arguably, more than any other guitar style, you can do so much with a tele. When was the last time you saw a bigsby H-S Les paul or strat? I've seen S_S_S, H_H_H, P-90, H_S, S-H, H_S_H. The door is wide open for you, bro!IMO, a quot;regularquot; tele requires more of a commitment than some other guitars. They are very simple guitars, and lots of players like the challenge of wringing as many tones as possible out of them. This will also force you to hone your basic playing skills.
There are just too many great tele players to say that quot;teles are badquot;.
That said, you should of course play some to see if they appeal to you. I find that teles often benefit from a good amp, and an overdrive or distortion.
A thing to remember is that Telecasters aren't for everyone. They're very basic, no frills guitars. That's part of the appeal of them IMO. Many people find strats to be more versatile and many prefer the sounds of strats. The tele stock comes with just a 3-way switch, a volume and a tone knob so it's a completely different animal.
I stayed away from them for the longest time because the only people I saw them with were country players and I hated that genre so I kept away. After messing around with some, I realized that they can be used for so much more.
Modded telecasters weren't a huge thing until a few years ago. I have a Tele-Sonic which is the bastard child of a Gretsch and a Tele (very cool and unique, but it's low output keeps it away from some styles) and a Harmonic Design equipped Warmoth Tele. The Tele essentially sounds like a p90 equipped guitar with the pickups I have in it, but I'm going to switch them out for a WCR Telecaster set (should be a Barden-on-steroids type tone). I like the thin, twangy, jangly type of sound regular Telecasters get, so without some hot pickups, I wouldn't go ahead and try it for metal or hard rock.
my telecaster is a mexican made in 1994 (top loader, and I like it that way) with Texas Special Tele pickups in it. I *LOVE* this guitar! I'm rediscovering how great the tone is with this guitar. That's all I have to say about that
