i was wondering.....let 's say I want to buy a cheap guitar (400$-500$) and mod it.... would it be a good idea to buy a guitar which plays well but sucks at tone? or does it have to play well and sound decent? because after all I will be changing the pups and knobs etc.

400-500... is not cheap at all to me.

I'd advise looking for a guitar that plays well but doesn't necessarily suck tonewise... I've found that a resonant guitar with crappy pickups will sound better than a block of glue with great pickups. Find a comfortable guitar that's resonant and loud acoustically basically.

slade

Theres more factors to the tone of a guitar then that. Its really up to you, a guitar that sounds crappy in the first place takes a lot of modding to make it a awsome tone machine. That being said, you can still make it sound quot;very goodquot;
Look for how easy it is to play in my opinion, you can always make it sound a little better.

EDIT: I mean from the original list, not slades. Slades right find a guitar that is loud and sounds good unplugged

Oh i forgot, if you find a high-end Ibanez SA series I think it be good. Replace the duncan designed pickups with some seymour and duncans and they sound pretty awsome and are a treat to play from my experiance

There is a lot of variable's here. A guitar that dosen't play well may just need a setup? Now when you say `Sucks at tone' Do you mean the way it sounds unpluged (i.e.) how it resinates and sustaines, Or the electronices. PuPs can be changed But Inferior woods and construction can't. Pick a guitar that feels right to you. It can be setup to you liking and a good set of Pups. A Cheap guitar with the right tweaks can play and sound as good as a 2k guitar IMO. But overall it must feel right to you .

I came up with the idea because often the manufacturers charge a higher price cuz of the pups or tuners... but if I 'm going to change them anyway, why pay a higher price for it.... I thought I could better buy a good playing guitar but without the good tone....

but I guess you all have a point saying I do need to look at
it's resonant qualities
