I know I know this has been asked before... but what gear exactly was used for the rhythm tone on that album... I've taken a shine to it.

Gibson Flying V (or Explorer, I don't remember), EMG 81 bridge p'up, 100w Marshall amps, and a Tube Screamer i think.

You're probably thinking of Kill 'Em All. They started using EMG's for RTL

They started using EMG's on the RTL tour. The album was recorded with what he mentioned.

Because the songwriting was poor. Production was one of least significant errors of St.Anger.

Because they didn't have a tuner, or a snare drum which they replaced with a can, and fought against solo's.

Nah, those are just easy things to blame in place of the larger problem facing that album. If St.Anger had crystal clear production, non-trash can snare,
solos, and non-detuned guitars then the album WOULD STILL be mundane. All those elements are just little irritating things that people notice easily and blame the albums flaws for.

St.Anger's problems are lack of interesting tonality and dynamics as a result of careless song craft.

I must say, I totally agree. The songs on that album are so repetitve and go on forever.

On the Monty Jay site it says that RTL was recorded with quot;Replacement 100 watt Marshall Heads that were later modifiedquot;, which says to me that they were stock heads, and were modified AFTER the album was recorded... Were these heads replacement Plexi heads or JCM 800? Which would be better for the RTL rhythm tone?

Also, about the Tube Screamer, how was it used? Always on? or boosted only for certain parts? I've heard people say that James used it always on to help his rhythm sound, but I'm confused because the quote below has James making a statement about how it's a negative thing. quot;It really helps Kirk's solos cut through, but it puts a ****ty coating on smooth rhythm tones, and it was hard to not make it sound like a pedal.quot;

the tubescreamer was always on for RTL. and, as that quote says, james didnt like that, so they never did it again

I wish they kept that setup. I don't like the tone on the other albums

Good gear doesn't mean good results St. Anger was simply something they had to flush out of their system (IMO) and it had to come out ugly like that. When you are dealing with crazy stuff, you usually go from one extreme to the other in order to find some balance.

As far as the original question goes, the amps were Marshalls. I can't say which models for sure, but they are 100 watt heads with 6550 power tubes. I am fairly certain they were not modded because after their gear was stolen, they have mentioned many searches to find an amp like Hetfield's stolen one but none ever matched up.

Most likely they were JCM800s and/or JMP heads. They later had a few modded JMP and Plexi heads modded by Jose Arrendondo. Most of the amps on the RTL tour were 100 watt JMP heads with 6550 tubes.
