hey I'm gonna paste a post I put at the carvin museum forum just to save the trouble of re-typing:

quot;So my guitar was delivered friday and I finally had some time to spend with it and set it up to my liking. The first thing I noticed was a really bad open G fret buzz. Now that I look at things closer, the slot in the M saddle was cut way too deep, so was the nut. I even took a ruler and a radius gauge and the G string is knocked down way too far. Furthermore, it looks like the nut was glued in, taken out and glued it again at the expense of some of the finish on the headstock. It looks like the tech was trying to address the problem but was inexperienced. also I got a pearl white finish. Under the finish there is a black smudge on the top. It's not all that noticeable but I know it's there. I called and spoke to albert and they are sending me a new bridge so I can set it up the right way, as far as the nut, I'll probably take that out and start from scratch also and probably put an earvana nut on there.quot;

The black spot looks like someone stuck a dirty finger on the top before it was clear coated over. It's really not all that noticeable. As far as the nut and bridge, that can be fixed, but some of the paint and clear coat are boogered up because the tech messed with the nut too much. I paid about a grand for it, and the guitar was meant to be played. I intended on keeping this one for a long time too. I called and asked about a possible rebuild and they can build another for me in about 4-5 weeks, cause it'll take priority.

I should add that I love everything about the guitar, right down to the color, it sounds, feels, and plays fantastic. These are relatively minor issues but keep in mind the guitar is BRAND NEW.

Tell me whatcha think? It's not gonna be hung on a wall and looked at but I think for the price I paid it should be perfect.

Well, that's not acceptable imo. Im not sure what you could or should do, but i wouldnt accept it!

Unacceptable on a new guitar.

Hmmm, that's a tough call. Unacceptable flaws yes, but what if the new one doesn't feel/sound/play the same?

Confucious says quot;I'm stumpedquot;.

i personally dont care about minor cosmetic issues if they are will to fix the bridge and nut thing that would be find with me i dont abuse my guitars but i expect em to gets their fair share of dings and such, if it plays and sounds great why mess with it.

I am not picky about my guitars, but I would not accept that on a new guitar. You should at least get some money back.

if it were me, i'd ask them to pay for a qualified tech/luthier to do the fixes to the nut/bridge ... dont sweat the finish smudge ... if they give you hassle, make them eat the cost of a brand new one

good luck and let us know how it goes

thanks guys, your opinions matter because I tend to be a picky person and wanted a 2nd point of view. The minor flaws it has are due to the tech who did the final setup. The guitar would have been perfect otherwise. So I don't really blame Carvin, it's one hell of a nice guitar.

Agreed.

they've already offered to take care of the bridge and nut, right?

have you asked about a refinish? wouldn't that take less time/cost them less money than a total rebuild?

unless, of course, by rebuild you meant that they'll just take care of those problems and not build a new guitar. if that's the case, kindly ignore me.

hahahahahaha, I DID IT!!! I knew Carvin stood for something!! LOL

dude quit playing guitar and buy a trumpet lol...although then we'll have to worry about stuck valves hehe. if you got it as a player don't worry about the little smudge that much...put in a new nut cut to fit your string gauge choice and put the new bridge on and play the heck out of that sucker! oh and don't forget the duncans !

is it acceptable on a new guitar..not realy but they are willing to fix it so do you want to wait 4 weeks over a smudge? how big is this thing anyway, got a pic?

Plain and simple, Xeromus.

If your not happy send it back and get a rebuild.

I did.

My very first Carvin.
Even though I call my '89 Yellow DC127 my first Carvin, it is actually the rebuild.
First one came with the wrong locking nut. It came with a Kahler Flip lock.
I didn't know at the time that when you ordered the guitar with the
Kahler Spyder it came with a the flip lock. All the catalog pics showed
It with the Floyd style nut. Didn't like the Flip.
Sent it back and they built me the '89 Yellow DC127 I have today.
Which is Floyd equipped. Actually the Kahler Steeler.
It originally had the Schaller Floyd. But, the screw holes for the saddle screws stripped.
Sent it back under full warranty. They removed the Schaller, rerouted the body,
and installed the Kahler Steeler. No charge.

The '89 Yellow Dc127 is still my main go to Carvin.
It's 16 years old now and working great.Kent

hahahahahaha, I DID IT!!! I knew Carvin stood for something!! LOLwell it's not just that, if it were, I'd just put a new nut on and call it a day. Problem is, the tech made a mess of the clear coat and paint in the area in the process. Minor stuff like that I wouldn't send it back over.

I think the real question is will that smudge drive you nuts? If you cringe every time you pick up the guitar you need to send it back. I have had similar situations and always returned the item. I am the kind of guy that would look at the inperfection and get annoyed. I'd probably send it back myself. Good luck bro.

A smudge under the clear coat on a white guitar is toally unacceptable in my book. I would want them to fix it. They should fix all of the problems you have emntioned, it is BRAND NEW. Man, you have THE WORST luck with guitars I've ever seen. You will love the condition of the Nighthawk I'm sending you. For 13 years old it is in great shape, I assure you.

If it's not, I'm coming to YOUR HOUSE. nah, I'm just kidding. I could tell from those pictures alone it was a beauty.

Com'on over we'll jam!

Man xeromus you have the worst luck with guitars ever. There must be an unspoken rule that companies send slightly flawed guitars to you just to see if you find the cosmetic problems.
