Well I just got mine from someone on the Harmony Central forums and WOW!
Not enough gain for metal? Muahahahaha wrong. Though it's true, it could do with a boost.
First of: preamp 1, preamp 2, preamp one level, master volume...So many controls!
I think the preamp 1 is basically what you switch on to kick in the real gain, preamp 2 is the gain knob for the amp as a whole, preamp 1 level is the master volume of the preamp 1, and master volume, the overall volume of the amp. Am I right?
Is it ok if I put preamp 1 and 2 full on? I can't put the 1's level too high since obviously, it's too loud.
I'm using a Full Shred. I'm plugging into the 'high' output. If I don't, I basically get a clean sound :| This pickup is supposed to be pretty hot though. Am I making a mistake and damaging the amp?
If you have any tips about it, then just suggest. I really like the way it sounds
if it works, i'm getting the 30W head from ben
i'll post a review of it (when i build my cab that is lol)
Ha ha, this thread couldn't of come at a more appropriate time. On Monday I received my Laney AOR 50 in the mail that I won off Ebay. It was originally built for the US so it runs on a different voltage to Australia. The trouble is that I haven't been able to use it all week because the voltage converter that was also included in the ebay auction was lost due to a postal service error. For the last few days I've been tearing my hair out because I have my first ever tube amp just sitting there doing NOTHING.
Apparently the step down converter was found and it should arrive at my front doorstep by the end of this working week. Hopefully I get it tomorrow. I can't wait!
The outside of mine looks very beaten up and ugly. There are many tears in thin vinyl covering on the outside, I think I might tear it all off and put some new vinyl on if it's possible. I took the amp out of it's chassis and inspected the top of it. There was a bit of dust there so I wiped it off. I looked under the amp to look at it's electronic guts and it is perfect. Looks like it could of been assembled yesterday. Someone even wrote next to the PC board quot;Hi! Americaquot;. Must of been written by whoever built it originally 20 years ago before it was shipped off the US. Kinda funny how it ended up in Australia.
Oh, Pierre, is your's a series 1 or series 2 AOR?
I've got a series 2 and I don't know what the difference is between the 1st and 2nd.

That's strange? I have a Laney PRO TUBE Fifty(pre AOR) And one of the most Unique things about it is That it has a voltage conveter built in. This amp can be pluged in almost anywhere in the world. I was think'in that was laney's Thing? You know like the BF/SF Fenders gave you a extra AC jack, And Marshall gave youa Impedance selector. Oh well?

that's great.
mine doesn't have the feature but should be the 30W version of yours.
mine does only have one presection, despite it's called AOR-Series Amp

Oh well?Yeh unfortunately mine doesn't have that option on the back. Wish it did because I could be rippin' it up right now!Originally Posted by PierreI think the preamp 1 is basically what you switch on to kick in the real gain, preamp 2 is the gain knob for the amp as a whole, preamp 1 level is the master volume of the preamp 1, and master volume, the overall volume of the amp. Is your AOR capable of channel switching between the non-aor and aor function at all? Because I assumed that the preamp 1/2 knobs should control the amount of gain on the non-aor/aor channel. The volumes knobs should be the master for each channel accordingly also.
I have a Laney AOR Pro Tube Lead 100 head that I've been trying to sell for over a year now! It's got way more gain than I ever use, so I might as well make room in the stable for a Fender Lite Ash Telecaster I've got my eye on
I'm glad to hear you like your AOR combo though

The schemo for my AOR 50 is too big to attach...bmail me with your email. The preamp is a quot;circle the 800quot; preamp with an extra stage/ gain knob (preamp 1) on the front end and an extra stage/ tone mods/ volume pad (preamp volume) on the back end. Think of it like an 800, with the preamp 2 and MV controls as the stock 800 controls, and the AOR preamp 1/ preamp volume controls as the things which you switch on to boost the front end of the 800 preamp and tame down the level at the back end respectively.
It has no shortage of bass, and can even sound a bit fuzzy because of that, so bright pups like the full shred probably work well with it. I've thought about modding it by trimming the first stage's coupling cap so the AOR channel has tighter bass.
Is it ok if I put preamp 1 and 2 full on?
No, don't do that, it's too dangeresque. Flames will shoot out of the speakers and hot metal chicks will flock to the sound of your wicked licks.
I'm plugging into the 'high' output. If I don't, I basically get a clean sound
The low gain input is basically the low gain input on the 800 but still has the pull pot tone features. You could either use that input with pedals or mod the amp, but then you have a modded amp with lesser resale value.
Ahh thanks dude, that clears it up! If you were to advise a clean boost for it, what would you say? I'm aiming at A LOT of gain (Er... InFlames, CoB) with tight bass and no midscoop. I have my mind set on the MXR Zakk Wylde (yeah yeah...) and the SD pickup booster. A friend of mine has a JCM800 combo Microamp and it's not as good as I'd hope...
I'd start with something which trims the bass a bit like the SD-1 or TS9, then try things with more low end in them if you need more low end...of course with the full shred you may not need to worry about that.
The SD1 probably will be my first choice if I can find a cheapo one to try.
The main stupid problem is that for each pedal you buy you also need a cable
I heard of some Maxon OD that could work well too, like the OD808 and the OD09.
I really do want the Jekyll and Hyde though maybe for when I upgrade my floorboard.
