I was reading the new quot;Guitar Playerquot; mag and there was a little section on how to play like Keith Richards. And in it he said he ran 2 amps at 1 time. 1 clean and 1 distorted. He said it gives him distortion and clarity.

So I was like hmmm.... I didnt have 2 amps but I had 2 inputs on my amps so I split my guitar signal and ran one clean into input 1 and the other through a overdrive pedal into input 2. I favored it over just my overdrive sound. It was pretty cool. The sound seemed fuller and it was nice and overdriven but with clarity and sparle. Solos sounded really good too. It added somthing slight to them...they just sparkled.eric

Yup. One of the best gigs I played was when I hauled an extra amp and had it as a dedicated clean, dry amp all night. Adds quite a bit to the sound, just a pain to set up.

The Voodoo Labs (I think it's them?) Sparkle Drive is supposed to mix clean and dirty signals in one unit...sound clips are pretty cool.

quot;Honky Tonk Womenquot; is the classic Keef tone using two amps live, it cuts.

That and being Keef, with all it's foibles, love what you do and do what you love.

Neat trick. I may try it!

I've done that before, and it is cool. The only problem is hauling two combo's.

Another cool trick is to have two amps and use an A/B box to switch between them for lead and rhythm. I used a Morley A/B box to do it.

Maybe have the clean amp be a 1x12? Less to haul around?

Back in the day, I used to run a semi-distorted and a 100% clean amp for my bass setup. It was pretty sweet. Very full, despite being clanky underpowered amps by nature.
