Does anyone know whether the SSL-1 Vintage Staggered and the Antiquity II Surfer are wound in phase (in the same direction) and with the same polarity?
From what I can tell with my SSL-1's and the specs of the Antiquity II, they should have the same magnet polarity, but I can't verify anything about the winding direction for phase issues. Specifically, I'm wondering if I can use a standard SSL-1 in the middle and a RWRP Surfer at the neck, with my Antiquity I Texas Hot Custom bridge, and still get the correct phase and hum-cancelling in all positions. This is like new math or something..
I'd also like to confirm the same information with regard to the SSL-1's and the 5/2 Nashville Studio Strat pickups, as I'm thinking about mixing a 5/2 neck with a RWRP SSL-1 in the middle and a Twang Banger in the bridge.
I'm pretty sure the SSL-1 and Surfer are the same...but that the Ant Texas Hot is not. The reason I say that is alot of guys here use the Surfer combined with the Twangbanger and have no problems with phase. I just installed a set of SSL-1's with a bridge Twangbanger and had no problems either. So they must be the same. Lew
Lew,
I have a Twangbanger with an SSL-1 neck and RWRP SSL-1 middle, and they work fine together, as you noted. However, I thought that someone (Stratdeluxer?) had reported problems with the Twangbanger phase when combined with the Surfer neck and RWRP middle. I hope that's not the case.
I currently have a Texas Hot neck pickup and Ant. I Custom bridge in a Strat, and while the bridge pickup sounds good, I don't like the Texas Hot neck pickup in this guitar -- too soft in the low end and a bit indistinct when overdriven. I'm trying to decide whether I should try the Surfer neck or a 5/2 neck instead, but they will have to be RWRP (north going) to work with the setup I have if my figuring is correct (Ant I Custom bridge is north, RWRP Texas Special middle is south).
I'm also a bit torn on whether to keep the Ant I Custom bridge or get another Twangbanger. I like the mids and tone of the Twangbanger -- reminds me of the Jerry Donahue Tele lead. But, like the JD, the Twangbanger is a little weak in the lows compared to the relevant Antiquity bridge pickup. I have to make a decision soon before the exchange period runs out.
Using the Ant Texas Hot and the Ant Surfer together does present problems. When I use the Texas Hot Custom bridge pickup with Ant Surfer neck and middle pickups I have to do two things:
1. reverse the position of the Surfer neck and middle...otherwise I will not have humcancelling when the pickup in the middle is combined with the Texas Hot bridge
2. reverse the black and white wires on the Texas Hot bridge...otherwise it will be out of phase when combined with the Surfers.
But I had no such problems combining the SSL-1 and Twangbanger. And I'm unaware of any problems combining the Surfers with the Twangbanger either...I've done it. It's been a while so maybe I'm forgetting something though!
