I want to go way out there and try something I have never had before and that would be a Ric. I want to get out and play one somewhere soon, but in the meantime what do you guys think of them. I love the ones I have heard in the past with the nice clean and jangly sound, but I wander if it will be ok for some of the other bluesy classic rock stuff I play. Also I keep hearing that they are more of a rythmn guitar. Is that true? I am not a shredder or even a marvelous riffer by any means, but I will do some runs up and down the neck every so often and I would be scared that a Ric might be a little stiff. Anyone....

Here are the one's I like:

Ric 1

Ric 2

Ric 3

Ric 4

Play one first, I've owned 2 of the 330 models and it's true that they are very nice sounding rythym guitars but because of the narrow neck it's hard to bend as easy as you would on another guitar. They have a great sound even with overdrive and you can get some nice feedback distorted.

So do they all have a really narrow neck? Do you think someone that's used to a Tele could play lead on a Ric?

i've been g.a.s.sing for a ric for a LOOOOONG time...i like the 600 series the best particularly the 660...i think they would be fine for some blues and of course classic rock...while they are easier for rhythm playing, some lead can be pulled off...it's all about the necks man...you gotta play one to understand it...they have a strange curve to em and a quot;stickyquot; gloss finish...i will own a 660 one day!

Some of the older ones have beefier necks. I have a 12 from the early 80's (I think) and the neck is great. I'm actually having it overhauled and the guy (a Ric guru) is going to set it up with flatwounds. I can't wait to get it back!

I played a prototype of the new George Harrison-ish 12, and it is great. Ric had an quot;advisory boardquot; kind of thing so they could be sure they would do it right.
If you can, try a few and see if you can seek out an older one.

I'd love to have a Rick, but I know I'll never be able to afford one.

they are pricey...even used i don't know if i've ever seen a 600 series for less than a grand.

I love every rick I've ever played (including 12 string), but only for 3 things- Thin multiple rhythem parts (ie petty), and slightly overdriven rhythem, and clean pettyish/harrison melodies- Much like a lespaul only seems good for heavythick sounds, I can't get any rick to sound anything but thin...but that can be a very useful sound that is often overlooked-

But as with others, the necks kill me- I play a wide thin U and ricks are very narrow-

I wish warmoth made a 330 body as it would be awesome with their 25.5 necks!

Most of the 80's Smithereens stuff is all Ric. I know that the album, 11, was done with Rics through Marshalls.

Judging from this I probably could never get used to the neck after playing a Tele for so long.

to be a Who Fan is to like RIC's sounds.... I hate playing them but those early Who albums had a great huge 60's tone to them... A guy i know in the States as a few that he brings up to Toronto for Jamming and i find them tough to play... But they have a sound all their own!

To hear a Ric sound very thick and heavy, listen to Converge. He even plays leads.

B Bent,
Rickenbacker makes a solid body 600 series guitar with a more traditional, large neck. The Dakota, I believe. It's got a thru-body neck and comes with higher output humbuckers.
This guitar was designed to compete head-on with Fender and Gibson. It certainly COSTS less than a Tele or ALOT less than a Les!The traditional models 330, 360 and 620 do indeed have the quot;slim, fast-actionquot; neck which admittedly is great for fast, easy chording but IS a bit restrictive for modern lead styles. They're all well made and more affordable than bolt-neck Fenders and especially less expensive than Gibsons or PRS!One thing's for sure: You always stand out from the crowd with a Rickenbacker! Eggman
PS: I've got two: a 360/6 and a 620/12. Both are wonderful
