While trying to figure out what pots and caps to use in my lap steel, I came up with an idea for what I call “The Tone Tester.” I’m sure I’m not the first one to do this, but here it is anyway.
I wired an input jack to a dpdt on/on switch, which let’s me select, either a 250k or 500k Volume pot. Then, an spst on/on switch let’s me select a 250k or 500k Tone pot. In the center I have a 6-way rotary switch so I can pick either, no cap, .010, .015, .022, .033 or .047 (all Orange Drops). The last part is the output jack.
I wired the guitar’s six-way pup selector switch directly (and temporary) to the output jack. I plugged the guitar into the tone tester, and the tone tester into the amp. Then I played the guitar and fiddled around with different combinations of pot values and cap values. I almost went with a 500k Vol, 250k Tone, .047 cap combo, but in the end I decided on a 250/250/.047 setup.
It’s very interesting to hear the effects of all the different values.
I went a little crazy with the label maker
Despite appearances, that thing in the middle is NOT the next Mars Lander.
Thats very awesome man!
You can really tweak which cap values and pots sound best in a particular axe!!
Way to go!!
Innovative!!
what if you just put that into the lap steel that way you dont have to decide!
that has to be the greatest idea I've ever seen!
That is a good idea. Certainly beats soldering them all on and off again!
I'm bumping this for Lew.
