I have a Parker Nitefly with somewhat high output quot;custom-wound-for-Parker DiMarzioquot; pickups (13k neck, 16k bridge), and I have heard from a guy that replaced the combo with a JB / 59 set that it sounded incredibly thin because there is not much wood on the guitar...Does this sound plausible? I have been thinking about pickup replacement (just because I have a mental 'stock pickups suck' mentality haha)... Would it be smart to replace the stocks with PAF style to insure the the sound will be full and round (I am thinking 7.7 neck and 8.7 bridge), or stick with a higher output pickup to match the original pickup sound? I am just worried about the 'lack of wood=sounding thin' idea...
I have heard from a guy who tried the JB in a lighter wood and found it rather thin, too.
Can't go wrong with a Custom, imo.
That's pretty darned high output...
Not compared to the Metal LiveWire
Well, you could try a Custom 5 - it's not quite as powerful, iirc. I don't see the problem with high output, honestly... sure, it's a myth that you high output pickups to play metal, for example, but they aren't going to do anything bad either. Failing all else, you could just get a plain '59.
I just hate indecision...I pretty much know that my tone will be good with any pickup that I buy, considering it is gonna be a Duncan or some handwound pickup....I have REALLY been digging String Cheese Incident's tone lately, its amazing...Anyone know what they use? I would guess a PAF or overwound PAF...hmmmmm

Bingo.
Just get a Duncan '59 or DiMarzio PAF Pro.
I like youre thinking...I am just gonna bite the bullet and buy something...
1. Depending on the model, it is likely that the Dmz designed pups are custom fit. There is no simple pup swap in the Parkers, unless you have a Mojo.
2. The original pups can be sent to MJ, and she can rebuild them to your specs.
3. If certain pups sound thin in the Parker, it is the pup or the pup/guitar combination. It is NOT the fact that the wood is thin. The design of Parkers maximizes the natural resonance of the wood in such a way that a large, bulky body is unnecessary. My Fly weighs in at about 4.5lbs, and sustains with the best of 'em.
4. What model do you have? What wood is in the body? The Nitefly-M is Mahogany.
Currently, I am playing a Fly Deluxe. An extra set of Dmz designed pups was obtained, and sent to MJ for rewiring. Instead, she ended up rebuilding them, including magnet swaps. What I have are essentially custom made C/C and AIIP pups. I'm thinking of sending an original in for another design. I'm not completely satifsfied with the C/C.
The Nitefly I sold to my Dad has the original s/c pups from Dmz. This is an original Nitefly with passive circuitry. I LIKE the sound of those pups.
Feel free to PM any time if you have more questions. I'm not an expert, but I have some personal experience with Parkers.
Nitefly with 2 custom DiMarzio humbuckers = Nitefle-M model!
Hence, we have a bolt-on mahogany neck amp; body!
Recomendations:
Antiquity set
Seth Lover set
APH set
Pearly Gates set
59 set
for stronger bridge.....hmmm..... Custom!
I would go for APH or Pearly Gates neck, Custom bridge!
Good luck!
