I am wanting to change p/u's in my wolfgang. I never play it because I'm not impressed with the tone. I changed the p/u's about a year ago with dimarzio air zone and air norton. They sound really muffled and too much low end. It doesn't do harmonics and tap harmonics really well at all. I'm looking for something with good harmonics and cuts well. Someone at SD recommended a custom and a jazz neck. Any suggestions?
Is your wolfgang an american or korean wolfgang? I'd change the pots out with 500k CTS pots. I'd keep the air norton but try a tone zone for the bridge. In my opinion, when changing pickups on any guitar, it's worth it to also upgrade the pots as well, as poor pots can suck tone, and they don't cost much either
Hmm. To me the stock pickups did the whole harmonic thing really well. If I ever change the pickups in my Wolfie, I'll probably throw a Custom/Custom in the bridge. From what I understand, that's the closest thing to EVH's early tone without going the Custom Shop route. And I find the harmonics to jump out quite nicely. Not quite as nice as the Distortion, but very well indeed.
What kind of tone are you looking to get? any artist in perticular?
I'd say go for the Custom Custom in the bridge and the Jazz in the neck.
And definitely look into those pots.

1 on that. Great combo.
The Custom Custom is closer to Ed's tone on F.U.C.K. than his earlier tones. Although playing some of the early stuff on my CC loaded Kramer sounds pretty convincing sometimes...and I emphasize quot;sometimesquot;...lol.
thanks for all the replies.
i have a 1st year american quilt tobacco sunburst.
the custom custom sounds interesting. nobody at sd even mentioned this pickup. i guess i could try the stock pickups back in it. can anyone describe what the cc sounds like in a wolfie or any other guitar!
thanks
I don't know why you'd have problems with harmonics with those pickups, to me those are some of the most harmonically charged Dimarzios out there. I'd suggest a pot change first of all, and then if that's not enough, change the pickups over to something else.

I agree. I have the very same combo in a Wolfe and I get pinch harmonics off of the Air Norton and the Air Zone with no problems at all. Have you tried to re EQ your amp???

I've played the CC in both an alder body and a maple body. It's perfect for both. Very nice and warm. Can't go wrong.
Well, I've only played a CC in my Hamer Special FM (mahogany body/neck w/ thick maple top). All I can say is that it does sound great. I might even like it as much as my Distortions.
