hey,

OMFG I need one of these guitars.... they are exactly what I am looking for....if anyone has played or seen these guitars in person please post me!!!

Matt can help you with all of your questions:

IMHO they're about $2000 more expensive than they should be.

Yeah I know, but they are still freaking cool! What are the tonal qualities of Basswood compared with Mahogany? Oh, btw my friend took his bass guitar and took electrical tape and did it himself...didn't look too bad.

if you ask me.. basswood sucks for tone wood. too thin sounding, too soft and not very acoustic.

those guitars are a ripoff if you ask me. 1st and foremost, they should be made from alder or at LEAST poplar if they really want to keep costs down.. but the price is insane

I played one- it was nice, but not worth the $2200- I am sure EVH gets about $1300 of that. Build your own, thats what EVH did.

$2200 is a lot, but it's better than the $4000-$6000 the first runs were going for on ebay. Sure, they're the first ones and their officially licensed and all, but Mincer's right, EVH built his own. I could build an amazing axe for $4k and a pretty nice one for $2k - a lot nicer than them.

I'm sure they're nice guitars, but I'd rather have some of the other Charvels.

Yeah, I guess I could to, I just haven't tryed to. Is it hard to build a guitar if u havent done it before, or is it easy to pick up?

it's not the easiest thing to do, but it aint rocket science either. you could built one with warmoth parts for a lot less than that and IMO, it'd be just as nice

Actually, Basswood is not a bad sounding wood. I've got a guitar made of it, and I get awsome rock and blues tones out of it.

If I wanted a guitar like these, I would build it from Warmoth parts. Do the finish yourself. You could buy all the parts, and with finish costs have less than $700-$800 into it, and probably have superior parts. Anything EVH touches is overpriced IMO.

That first run on Ebay were all guitars that were hand-taped and painted by Ed himself. They went for a lot more than $4-6k too . Their starting price was $5,150, but they skyrocketed.

I agree, basswood is a pretty nice tonewood. A little softer than I'd like, but it sounds great. A few of the quot;high endquot; makers (Anderson, Grosh, etc.) are starting to use a basswood body with a maple cap, and it supposedly sounds godly.

well.. then i got all the ****ty ones .. 90% of them were ibanez ones though.. so there were possiblyother factors too.. but damn it's soft. thatalone puts me off cos i've seen what happens with the finish on one when you drop it... allthough, that was an ibanez too

If they were lower end Ibanez guitars, you never know how much bondo was on the bodies too .

Yeah, I've seen the pictures, but I don't believe it. I don't think they could get him to do all that work. It would be cool to have one of HIS striped guitars though.

Warmoth or similar is definitely what I'd suggest. I almost ordered one from them myself, until I rescued my Peavey from a pawn shop, and I'm still considering ordering the makings of one from them. I'd like to eventually build my own from a block of wood and some metal, but I don't think I have that kind of patience. But a kit would definitely be easy - that's basically what my PV ended up as, after I disassembled it and stripped the paint. From when I took it home to the first time I was playing it was less than a month, and part of that time was waiting on my pickguard (had some ordering problems over the net).

For the amount of money he probably got from those, I doubt he'd mind taping up a few guitars haha. There weren't that many taped by him on Ebay I don't think, just one or two of each color scheme?

i think there were a total of 6 i think.. or around that.. they said 30 of each paint scheme (white and black) but i dont think he did all of em himself

There was a red/black/white, white/black, and yellow/black, so that's 90 axes... depends on how long he was given to do them I guess. Who knows, maybe he just did the taping and then Charvel's paint shop did the rest...

I agree though, I don't see him doing all of them, maybe 1 or 2 of each.

from : localhost/were a total of 52 hand striped EVH guitars when the dust settled, all were sold over his eBay shop... *EDIT* Intereistingly enough, the site displays nr 85 as the quot;abusedquot; one....I´ll see what I can dig up....

from : localhost/feedback.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI...=evhguitarshop

Whether or not EVH really striped them all is something you´re free to speculate over, but AFAIK he did.

Wow, very cool. Thanks for that info Zerb.
