im looking at a new amp. this amp will be for clean tones. right now its a tie between the roland jazz chorus jc-120, and pretty much all of the fender amps in the price range (vibrolux, twin reverb, deluxe reverb (anywhere from 700 to 1000 or so u.s. dollars)). it will be for the strat- like cleans (think john frusciante, but also sublime). please help me decide. think of this as a poll but your vote is your post.
How bout a Traynor YCV80. You can get it in a 212 or 410, and in my experience blows most lower end Fenders out of the water. Granted, not everything you're talking about is quot;lower end, quot; but give it a good long look.
I can't imagine a Roland Jazz Choris getting very close to Frusciante. I like 'em, but they're not really in that ballpark, are they?
Come to think of it, I've no idea what Frusciante uses! I always just assumed he used old Fenders.

frusciante uses mostly marshall amps (the original plexi types i think) but sometimes he uses fenders (soul to squeeze, californication). i can get pretty close with the roland, but im not looking to nail his tone exactly anyway. i was just giving an example of a sound i like.
There's a JC120 in the local store for $500 used. One of the best jazz amps ever.
ive always heard it was mainly a jazz amp, but ive found it really works well for any type of clean music. i also found its not that dark of an amp. it can really get bright if i want it to.

id rather play it before i buy it. there arent any trayner amps (that ive found) near me. i mean, if someone wants to send me one for a test drive....
Dude, go for the 120.
yeah im leaning towards that one. does the 120 take distortion pedals well? i might get a new one like maybe a tonebone or something.
I dunno, but you could always A/B amps. I haven't picked one up, but it looks very heavy.
well this will be my 3rd amp, my first being a squier practice amp, and my second being a behringer v-ampire (distortion not that good, although not that bad either)
Well, is the JC120 somewhere you could take some pedals along to try?
I don't think Rolands take pedals very well. I wouldn't buy it just because you found one locally. I'd keep looking at Fender tube combos. I never understood anyone's attraction to JC120's. They sound Hi-Fi and kinda stale to me......almost like plugging into a PA system. Being 80's solid state amps, they don't have a very pleasing breakup either, since the gain starts to sound like a DOD overdrive, the higher you turn it.
Can you tell I'm not a fan of those amps? hahaha
on the amp i played, you can really turn it up pretty far and it doesnt seem to break up. granted, i didnt go all the way up, but i got to where i dont need it any louder.

yeah ill probably do that today. they have a bunch of pedals thee i want to try anyway.
The JC120 is appealing to jazz players because it lets the tone of your guitar come through and it's super clean and hi-fi. Probably not a great amp for anything heavy.
man i still cannot choose. i might be bringing it around (including up and down stairs), so the roland might not be such a good idea considering its size and wieght compared to the fenders.
ok i think ive ruled out the jc-120 due to its size and wieght and the fact that most poeple say it doesnt do well with any distortions and i will be using distortion in front of it. so now its between all of the fenders around the 800 or 900 dollar range (give or take a hundred or so). so what do you guys think? which fenders have you played, and which do you like? at the shop near me there are the deluxe reverbs, twin reverbs, super reverbs (all reissues). also the tweed versions of some of these (i think at least the twin reverb). also the vibrolux reissue. so far the one i played most is the twin reverb and i like it alot. what are some pros and cons people have found of this one?
