is that classic Fender natural overdrive?

I don't remember, but this is an oft-asked question. If you do a search on the web, you'll find out who did the solo, and exactly the equipment he used.

after searching a little, here's a hint:
Elliot Randall

and it was likely a '63 strat with a Gibson HB in the neck through a Super Reverb

If I'm not mistaken, I read in a mag that it was a cranked Fender Champ. Cool tone regardless of what he was using.

I find tons of info about Elliot Randall no amp is specified though...i'll take your word on the SR with a HB pup in a '63 strat neck.

I did find some fun links Aweful Tone

Reelin' in Years...Kickin' My...

I wondered if it could actually be a Champ on that tune...

That tune totally put Elliott Randall on the map...cool history lesson for me here.

I don't know specifically what he used on that solo, but here's some info on his gear:
Elliot Randall gear

just do a search for quot;Elliot Randall gearquot;

Thanks Curly...thanks for the link. I shoulda left Reelin out of the query.

Great info and he likes Lemon Pledge for neck and body polish
definitely a site to bookmark.

Super Reverb it must have been.

Not to make this more confusing, but I'm fairly sure that I read in an interview with Elliot that he happened to be playing through a Marshall on that particular tune. I've looked all over trying to verify it and I can't find anything that confirms or refutes it. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure because I'm definitely not a Marshall guy, I'm a 6L6 guy.

Actually that solo was played through an Ampeg SVT with the volume dimed (which must have been obscenely loud) and was miked with an AKG C414, and the guitar was the trusty strat with the PAF in the neck. When I first heard that song I always though it had to be some fuzz pedal or something, but I guess an Ampeg on 10 will do it.

I agree that it was the strat, but it's making me nuts that I can't find confirmation of which amp he used...lol

I thought that the raspy tone was guitar plugged directly into the board and maxed out...Same way the Beatles did quot;Revolutionquot;...The tones are similar also.

This isn't getting clearer, it's getting more confusing...lol

I guarantee it's the Ampeg, that's straight from the horse's mouth in an interview...

1 on the Ampeg SVT. That tune was included as one of Guitar Player magazine's 100 Best Tones of All Time. It was a year or so ago - you might be able to find the article on their web site. I'd look it up for you, but my copy is in Houston and I'm in Edmonton.

They quote Randall as saying it was an SVT bass head, dimed. I was surprised to read that, because for me, Steely Dan is synonymous with quot;small, cranked-up Fendersquot;.

Yeah, it must have been loud, that's a 300 watt head. The good news is, there are smaller Ampegs that will probably sound similar. Look around for the V2 or V2B heads, or a VT40 - I think they all put out about 60 watts.

I must have been mistaken about the Champ ........Brain cramp.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Jeff Baxter was playing that lead and he did it direct with a homemade Strat. That's from a Guitar Player interview from about 1980.
