Well for instance guitar wise, 80s Fenders and Charvels/Jacksons are said to be amazing bang for the buck second hand. They go for cheap and are amazing. I may want a bass for xmas but I have no idea what to start looking for. What matters to me is not the sound but the luthery. If it's well built and looks good, I'm all for it. I do my own setup and by xmas most likely fretwork, so 2nd hand doesn't matter as much. I don't have ANY requirements, so 21 frets or 24, 34'' or whatever other scale, nothing matters as much as good woods and assembly quality New or second hand. Any help is appreciated. Cheers guys!

Bought a MIM Jazz Deluxe bass for my nephew, and I'd have bought it for myself if I were shopping for one. Played well, looked good, excellent fit/finish... You may just have to play several to find the quot;rightquot; one. Cost about $550 US.

Ohhh duh I forgot the budget... I'm hoping less than 200... (yeah, I know... ouch).
I shall have a look into MIM Fenders though. Probably would be a bit too expensive based on prices here.

Actually Peavey makes a decent bass in that range. It ain't a Warwick but its pretty damn good for the money.

Ok here's a little list:

The Peaveys offer amazing bang for your bucks. Also, please do take a look at Yamaha's BB-line. If you can get a BB604 for a good price (it has recently been replaced by the BB614, which goes back to the classic BB bodyshape - and is actually a very nice bass too), that might make you one very happy bassist .

By the way, where in the Netherlands are you (or do you come from)?

Pierre, look for a used ESP (even LTD) bass. I bought my ESP LTD B304 during a warehouse clearance from AMS. It retailed for nearly $800. I paid $369. You can probably find a similar bass used closer to your range.

Or go for a used Fender MIM bass.

At any rate, the ESP line in the $7-800 range new will probably work for you in the used market.

Tonefordays got one of the Agile bass' for his wife and had some good things to say about them.
Check them out:

Gamp;L Tribute. I was told by Gamp;L's rep that they have the same pickups as the US versions.

If that's true- go for it.

My main bass for the past 8 years has been an L-2000. My quot;backupquot; basses are a '65 Jazz and a '79 Thunderbird.
don't forget ibanez. their basses feel good, play well, and are inexpensive. and as been mentioned peavey is a good choice too.

my first bass was a crafter cruiser, ?130 from a mom and pop store..

i tried all of the sub-?170 basses, and just liked this one the best - J-type pickups, thin neck, thin body.. it was great fun for slap, the string spacing was great! i gigged with it twice, then upgraded to my washburn

they are similar-ish to the ibanez GIO basses.. if you're checking the ibanezes out, try one of these as well - they're not really a brand name, but they have good distrubution in the UK, and i loved mine!
