I have an old guitar that I am gonna string up with some 13's and use for slide, I had a brass slide a while back but I have lost it.

From what I understand brass is a good slide material, somewhere between glass amp; ceramic? I am pretty sure I will get a brass one because the other was fine.

The main bit of the question though, should I get a standard flat one or a curved one (it says it is 12quot;), the majority of my guitars have 12quot; fingerboards, including the one to be adapted, but is there any downside to using the normal one?

Any thoughts?

I have a flat slide, amp; I think it works for me. I have the strings set flat at the bridge, but the nut is unmodified, so the string height gradually curves toward the nut. My slide is glass, so your results may vary. When you say quot;curvedquot; is it curved to follow the fingerboard? I have never tried that.

I went from brass to glass, because I thought the metal was a little harsh. I also switched to .013s, a flat wound jazz set, to tame it down more. But that metal grind you get from m a brass slide on round wounds through the bridge pickup is cool...

It's really a personal thing, and I've found the slide I use depends on the guitar, what I'm playing (dedicated melody or fills) and what finger I'm wearing it on. Before I came across the Latch Lake stuff I rarely played slide because I could NEVER find one that fit well or had a good weight/tone ratio. Now I've got a couple three that do the job! No joke, there's like a dozen or so scattered around the place.

You really have to try a bunch out and see what works for you. #1) Can you control it?. Some brass and ceramic slide's are heavy and difficult to control. You end up draging it on the strings Instead of gliding. #2) Tone. I prefer Glass on electric, Brass on acoustic. I don't like metal slide's. To me they sound bright and brash, But a 11/16 deep socket wrench worked for Lowell George.

Thanks for the info all.

i just use a regular pyrex slide. Great sound, great control, minimal buzzing.

Many players prefer the neck of a wine bottle because of the thickness and quality of the glass.

depends on the tone you want...a heavy metal slide will be a little bright and sustain/ring a lot (think Elmore James/Nighthawk/Muddy)...glass is better for the Allman/Harrison smoother single note stuff---a lighter tone. Take a tip from the pedal steel guys---more weight fattens up the tone up to the point where the bar gets too heavy to move around...

(another stupid pet trick---get some of that rubberized magnet stripping and curl it in an oversized slide so your finger still fits. The magnet holds on to the string just a little...sustains like crazy; sounds nuts, but it works).

there are so many to pick from now

I use a Dunlop 215, fat walled Pyrex, but I've bought quite a few different kinds the last year just for the heck of it

a couple good ones are a heavy chromed brass Dunlop, and the Rockslide, which is very ergonomic and well made

I used a length of copper pipe I found that was just the right size. It need deburring on the ends, but worked fine

I suck at slide but I love it so....

I generally use a Dunlop 218 short fat glass slide but I have some of just about everything. I like a few ceramic ones but they tend to have a lot of drag. I have an anodized aluminum Big Heart that doesn't always sound great but is fun to play with, lots pf different angles and it brings out a real different tone.

I also have one of Mick Mars slides but it is only for decoration since it is so tiny it doesn't even fit my pinky. I want one of the Joe Perry Boneyard slides for my collection.
